Don't Mess With Texas ... a note from Michael Moore

Today, the Dixie Chicks release their first album since the Right Wing and country radio tried to destroy their career. Three years ago, on March 10, 2003, Natalie Maines, lead singer for the Dixie Chicks, uttered this one sentence from the concert stage: "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." It was just 10 days before the start of the Iraq War and, although millions of people throughout America and the world had taken to the streets to protest the potential war, few in positions of notoriety were willing to take a stand. The Dixie Chicks did -- and the Right began a concerted effort to ruin their lives. They were banished from most radio stations, even though they had the number one song on country radio that week ("Travelin' Soldier"). Death threats followed. There were public burnings of their CDs. Bush's backers knew one thing: these three moms from Texas -- the perfect Republican demographic -- had to be stopped. If Bush lost the core support of country music lovers, well, that would be curtains for him. So an organized campaign to silence their voices began. And it almost worked.

Today, May 23, 2006, the Dixie Chicks have returned. They have made a beautiful album. They are pulling no punches and they bravely have remained true to themselves. Pundits are predicting that the damage the Right did to them may be too great for them to recover. Let's prove them wrong.

Let's never let the forces who seek to punish those who speak the truth win out.

Goodbye, Earl ... and goodbye, George!

Michael Moore

6. You don't have to like country music to like the Dixie Chicks...
Go to their website and listen to their title song "I'm Not Ready to Make Nice."
http://www.dixiechicks.com/

Also, with this CD, they're crossing over to more rock 'n roll (OK, not Bruce rock 'n roll...). The NYTimes on Sunday had a great article about them:

The Dixie Chicks: America Catches Up With Them

(You can also watch & listen to their new song along with some of their others here via AOL...)

8. Country's my least favorite genre, I'd rather listen to jackhammers
but I bought and enjoyed their first album. Sometimes a group is SO GOOD that they transcend the nausea that a dobro whining in the background produces. The Chicks are such a group: good writing, good harmonies, solid musicianship.

Another one is James McMurtry. His "Childish Things" album is a keeper and "Can't Make it Here" should be the anthem of this dismal administration.

Reviewers are saying this Chicks album is at least as good as the first and possibly better. I may have to pick it up.

5. I loves the few positive DU threads about Texas/Texans...so rare!
:D

Sure we have are wackos, but we're a huge state! What's your excuse Ohio? :P Anyway, it's nice to have the good Texans pointed out from time to time.

As for the Dixie Chicks, I'm waiting anxiously for my cd to arrive from Amazon. I pre-ordered it 2 minutes after watching their latest music video.

11. My opinion of ohio is about the same as my opinion about texas
its down there but I'm not going to visit it any time soon. Any state that would try to legistate oral sex for women well, need I say more. What got me is it was on the recieving end and not the giving end that ohio out lawed.

17. I think ...
Florida has the most wack jobs per sq. mi than Texas or Ohio. Dubya is not a real Texan....the Dixie Chicks are real Texas women. Real Texans can kick ass and don't mind mixing it up. Dubya has no spine and has never stood on his own 2 feet like a man. The Dixie Chicks have more balls than he does. Can't wait to pick up the albumn.

play at the Austin and "Hill Country" venues!!

Paul Nunn, Guy Clark, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Jerry Jeff Walker (transplant from Oneonta, NY)
Kelly McGuire (Gulf Coast-Galveston area), etc.

Not to mention Molly Ivins and Jim Hightower!

And of course, the Dixie Chicks (and I can't wait until the end of the working day so I can go to Best Buy and get their new CD on special)

Don't mess with REAL Texans, George!

21. Not really into country, but I love that song. Great lyrics
Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother :: Jerry Jeff Walker

He was born in Oklahoma,
His wife's name's Betty Lou Thelma Liz
And he's not responsible for what he's doing
Cause his mother made him what he is.

And it's up against the wall Redneck Mother,
Mother, who has raised her son so well.
He's thirty-four and drinking in a honky tonk.
Just kicking hippies asses and raising hell.

Sure does like his Falstaff beer,
Likes to chase it down with that Wild Turkey liquor;
Drives a fifty-seven GMC pickup truck;
He's got a gun rack; "Goat ropers need love, too" sticker

And it's up against the wall Redneck Mother,
Mother, who has raised her son so well.
He's thirty-four and drinking in a honky tonk.
Just kicking hippies asses and raising hell.

Well,
M is for the mudflaps you give me for my pickup truck
O is for the Oil I put on my hair
T is for T-bird
H is for Haggard
E is for eggs, and
R is for REDNECK.

Up against the wall Redneck Mother,
Mother, who has raised her son so well.
He's thirty-four and drinking in a honky tonk.
Kicking hippies asses and raising hell.

He's up against the wall Redneck Mother,
Mother, who has raised her son so well.
He's thirty-four and drinking in a honky tonk.
Just kicking hippies asses and raising hell.

he has touched into gold.

I think it is a brilliant CD.
