POLAR ICE CAPS.....and lots of other observable phenomena. Go educate yourself on Global Climate change before you bring that nonsense around here. Even thios morning the President of Shell Oil acknowledged that he debate ofver whether climate change is occuring is over. The increased tornados are but one small piece of that puzzle.
It's a fast moving train and you are standing at the staion.....

16. 'Saw-right. A lot of us have been screaming into the wind, trying |
|
to be heard, that reactions tend to be automatic.
I am always suprised when people don't hear my tone of voice through their screens, too.

9. Don't use the term "climate change". |
|
That's a right wing frame to try to make the issue sound less threatening. Call it what it is, "global warming".

10. It's not strictly a right wing frame. |
|
I use it myself, I've seen and heard others not in the RW use it, and BTW, so does Greenpeace. http://www.greenpeace.org/international/campaigns/climate-changeGlobal warming is the cause, and climate change is the effect.

17. They've unknowingly bought into using the frame. |
|
That's the way it works. The RW repeatedly uses a phrase in the media until everyone else adapts it and ends up shifting the frame.
For example, everyone talks about "partial birth abortion". That's not a medical term, it's a right wing frame and people have been perpetuating it by using that term instead of the proper medical term.
The fact that everyone is using a term doesn't automatically mean that it's the correct term. It may simply mean that the right has been successful in disseminating it.
They use language in very subtle and effective ways and we need to be aware of it and not buy into it.

18. Actually, climate change is the more scientifically accurate term. |
|
Global warming is a generalized average which, though true enough, may not be reflected in many climes. Some places may react with shorter, warmer winters, but cooler, wetter summers. Others may have greatly increased local temps, accompanied by desertification. If you just say 'global warming' you'll have the yahoos saying "but I froze my butt off last winter - it's never been so cold" and he might be right, because the local variant could be shorter, more intense winters and longer, hotter summers.
While global climate change might sound like a kinder, gentler term, the full term would be 'human influenced global climate change'. The 'human influenced' is the part the anti-environmentalists have a problem with.

the complexity of "global warming", but "climate change" is quite stark, more "digestible" and not as assailable.
And the RW has no problem saying "global warming" when it suits them to denigrate the concept. We should have no problem using the clearer phrase "climate change" to take it from them, if indeed they ever owned it to begin with.

A field day? What are you talking about? Global warming is a bad thing. Very few people, if any, would celebrate it!

8. Yup. It's amazing what people will believe, based only on |
|
facts and their own experience.
We should believe the oil companies. They've had very expensive experts working on this for years.

Kinda reminds me of a run-in I had with a Bush Brownshirt, complaining about "big" government. I quickly stated that he was just giving his power as a citizen to big corporations.
