Poll question: Let's hear from everybody who voted for Dukakis/Bentsen in 1988. |
|
I was registered Republican at the time. Hated the Bushes as far back as 1988. So here's the poll question: What party were you affiliated with when you voted the Dukakis/Bentzen ticket in 1988?

1. I only relatively recently admit to being a Democrat |
|
but I have NEVER voted for a repuke, except once in a primary to help pick the only relative moderate 'puke among several kooks.

8. I went to a rally in my town with Dukakis |
|
I remember it so well. He came through on a train and it was really cool. Like you see in old movies. I also remember GW coming through my town on a train and I did not go to that one but had to stop and wait for the train to go by. I had my hand out the window. I can't say what my finger did. LOL

9. Unless you'd mentioned Bentsen as the VP candidate, |
|
I wouldn't have been able to recall his name. Bentsen was my congressman when I graduated from high school, and I still have a pass to the House that he sent to all high school grads in 1953. I should have remembered his debate with Danny Quayle--"I knew Jack Kennedy. He was a friend of mine. And you're no Jack Kennedy."

11. As a life long dem, it was the only year that I did not vote straight |
|
democrat. As I was living in CT at the time, I did vote for Lowell Weiker over Joe Lieberman. Joe came out with some nasty ads that irritated me, and I still appreciated Weiker from his Nixon impeachment days. Voted for Wieker again in 90 when he ran for gov as an independent over Rowland and the dem nominee who was some party insider.

Lloyd was much better in his debate than Duke was. But I voted for that ticket, of course.

His repeated divisive and condescending rhetoric was appalling to me. I have never been a partisan - neither Democrat nor Republican. I regard it as a kind of moral blindness. I cannot comprehend the (so-called) Democrats who, even today, castigate and sneer at Dukakis - most often with the theme of 'bad campaign' and 'embarassment.' That's just fucking nonsense, imho.
At the same time, bigotries seem to run thick no matter what the party label one assumes - not the least of which are the regional bigotries shown by too many who ("just happen to be from Southern states") reject "Northeast Liberals."

23. I remember the word exchange |
|
It was a moment to remember as it put Quayle in his place on national TV. I really thought that Bush/Quayle were history, even after the Willie Horton deal. I have never in my life voted for anyone other than a Democrat and at my age now, I never will change that.

I was so disappointed! I had remember picking Dukakis to win the nomination way way ahead of time, too. I'm sure my proximity to Mass helped as well...
