Paid for by taxes or whatever? I know that there are fewer than there used to be.

8. My son will be attending Humboldt State University in Arcata
beginning in August. Annual tuition is about $3700 and another $1200 for books. That's not bad, but the room and board are the killers. Sharing a room and a meal plan is about $8800. Thankfully we've located about $7000 in grants. It would be very nice if at least the tuition were free.

4. what do you mean by "paid"?

State support of public higher education is ridiculously less than it used to be.

I think every state has some form of public higher education, though.

6. That's the sort of system I was thinking about.
I think other states also offer this to residents who have some years of residency in the state?

9. Florida has Bright Futures
but it is not free for all Florida colleges and universities. And how much they fund depends on your grades. It is a great program, though.
