The Dixie Chicks
This morning the Dixie Chicks were interviewed on "Good Morning America". Before the interview Diane Swayer said that after the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks made her comments about Bush the group received a large amount of opposition and protest. After I heard Swayer say that I thought that maybe the Chicks had not really received that much protest, but that the media blow things up to make it seem like more people were against the group than was true. I do not doubt that the group got very hateful mail. I believe they did and I do not believe the group tried to make out like things were worse than they were. However, I think they probably got very hateful mail from a rather small amount of people and the media wanted to make it seem like everyone hated the Chicks and supported the war. Notice how on this morning's show they showed the opinion of the soldiers fighting the war. The soldiers fighting the war supported the idea of the Chicks speaking out against the war. As far as I know the media did not show very much of the opinions of the soldiers when Natalie Maines first made her comments. I think the soldiers would have supported the Chicks than also.

1. After Maines made her statement in London,
Clear Channel threw a hissy fit and banned their CD. A few other country stations followed suit. Some redecks who confused Bush with god sent them hate mail. As I recall, their CD sales INCREASED, which kind of makes the whole media line about how their careers were destroyed a complete fabrication.

This is just more media horse shit. Anybody who believes any talking head on TV is telling the truth about anything is naive.

2. bought their new CD yesterday...
Very good, not my normal cup of tea, but I liked it, and felt the need to support them, as they're not backing down a bit! Good on them!

7. I did the same. My first country CD
which hasn't arrived yet. I don't even know their music. But I felt, after reading about them in this week's TIME magazine, that they deserved my support. There are still many radio stations who won't play them. I like their attitude, also. Their defiance is needed. I wish our media would show as much fortitude as these young ladies.

The Chicks said in an interview that they weren't sure if people would show up to their concerts or not. Well, they did. They were sold out I think in every city. I know in Portland, there were a few protesters but the show went on and it was sold out. Not a problem. The media made it seem like they were traitors. All Natalie said was she was ashamed Bush was from Texas, her home state.

8. "NOT READY TO MAKE NICE".....
Remember that first concert after that oh so sinful comment Natalie made - I think it was in S. Carolina? Sold out. Just as the post below says - so many people back them or just do not care.
WHERE DID FREEDOM OF SPEECH GO in this country? Hey, I backed Natalie from day one, not just because I agreed with her but because the people of the United States reacted so strongly to one persons comment. Come on - it is just an opinion. Lately, look at all the musicians coming out with the anti war songs/CD's and PEOPLE AGREE WITH THEM.
Big deal, so Natalie said she was ashamed Bush was from her home state Texas - she was getting the message out about what she, one person - thought about this war. This never ending war - watch out, George W is going to get the US in more trouble before his "Dynasty" ends - I am so afraid that he will not only turn CA (yes I live there & visit people in TX) into Mexico, but my biggest fear is that he will get us into World War III - he listens to no one, he is never wrong, he blames everyone, everything for any wrongness and have you all noticed - he NEVER owns up to what he did?
Heck no - I am so glad that Natalie & the others are Not Ready To Make Nice - either am I.

4. They were hated by a very large group of people
Edited on Tue May-23-06 06:23 PM by Beaverhausen
This was back in 2003 remember, when most people still supported the war.

They got death threats, they are now virtually banned from country radio and several stations have special events in which listeners came down and joined in the bulldozing of Chicks CDs.

There is an OK article on them in this weeks TIME magazine. The author of the piece is a bit snarky but there is pretty good info.

Edit: Natalie Mains now only regrets her apology, which was said to that asshole Diane Sawyer on 20/20 a few months after her comment. These women all had very small children at home and were literally fearing for their lives.

Natalie Mains rocks!

5. Yes when they were on 60 Minutes they said
that they had some very specific deaths threats where a time, place and means were actually detailed. It must have been really scary but they went ahead with their shows anyway, good for them.

6. I am not a country music
fan myself but pre-ordered the cd as soon as it was offered. They are wonderful and have been proven
right on target with the remark made in London. I watched them last night on Letterman and they delivered a very powerful performance. Go Chicks!

12. I disagree
I doubt they made it any worse than it was.
Unless you have been the target, you have no clue how vicious the repukes can be.
I know.
There is no need to exaggerate.

14. What I said
That is what I said. I do not think they exaggerated anything. I really think they got threats; however, I think the media made it seem that more people were against them then were really against them.

15. The Chicks are the reason
I even listen to country music. Before I heard of them in like 97-98, I would have never listened to country music. Put 3 pretty young chicks who could played instruments better than most veteran musicians in a music video and it will get your attention. I'm sure I'm not the only person who started listening to country music because of them, so the country music industry should pucker up and kiss their a$$es for getting people to even listen to country music.

19. I alerted the chicks to where the hateful mail was coming from
I don't know if you were watching at the time, but freerepukelick was going WILD over the Chicks and Natalies comments.

They had up more email addresses of management and sponsors and radio stations than you could imagine.

I made a letter for sponsors which included links to the puke threads targetting them and also a few other FR gems showing their ignorance in all their glory and implored them not to be intimidated by a small group of hateful losers.

I also alerted the Chicks management with the same variety of links and they were very grateful and ended up giving me backstage passes for a show in Calgary and I got to "meet and great" for a few minutes. It was fantastic!

25. I dont give a rats ass what their "politics" are...
When they produce something timeless that I enjoy, maybe then I will care. Until then, they're just another band trying to create a buzz to sell their wares. Lets see where they are in 10 or 20 years and how many "classics" they have produced in that time.

Sorry to be a wet blanket... but these ladies are a long way from "icon" status in terms of musician-ship.

27. With ya there.
In seven years, their lame country-politan pop panderings like "Ready to Roll" will sound as dated, hidebound, and annoying as anything Chingy, Three Six Mafia, Alien Ant Farm, Fall Out Boy, or any other A&R man's wet dream put out in the last five years.

Sure, it's great that they're politically right on. Aesthetically, though, they're just more lumpy oatmeal from Bed Pan Alley.

28. Actually
Actually I think they will stand the test of time. They have a number of songs that will be around in the next 10 to 20 years. I think songs like "Cowboy Take Me Away", "Wide Open Spaces", "There's your Trouble", and maybe even "I Can Love You Better" will still be favorites of a number of people. It may be that only those who actually liked country musci before they came on the scene, I tend to think it is hard for country music starts to become iconic in mainstream music.

29. Incorrect
They got legions of hate mail... you should have read the filth on their website before they shut it down. They were BLACKLISTED out of the industry as surely as was anyone attacked by McCarthy, they had legit death threats, they couldn't go out into their community like they had been, they were publicly demonized by Country "stars" (with ONLY Tim McGraw and Faith Hill standing by them), they houses were vandalized, etc. etc. etc.

If anything, the media didn't report the worst of it....
