5 Run Over at Ga. McDonald's; 3 Are Tots
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/M/MCDONALDS_CRASH?SITE=FLTAM&SECTION=US

COVINGTON, Ga. (AP) -- A driver ran over three young children and two women in the parking lot of a McDonald's restaurant Tuesday, police said. One witness described the man as having a smile on his face.

"All indications are that he intentionally hit them," Assistant Police Chief Almond Turner said.

...

Barnes' mother, Mary, told The Associated Press that her son has battled mental illness.

"He's been suffering with depression for years," she said, her voice shaking after being contacted by telephone and told by a reporter what happened. "Lord have mercy."

Wonder what the reasons are behind this guy not getting the help he needs.

be making jokes about the "tots".

My son's father got violent towards him when he was an infant when he abruptly stopped his prozac years ago.

Please think before you post.

edited to fix speling :)

8. If you're going to make a joke about a story like this
then it had better be very goddam funny. This one wasn't.

2. Sounds like a psychotic break.
If he has been battling mental illness for a long time, he might finally have snapped.

6. Just so.
And you know what some of these medications COST? Sometimes these things happen because the person can no longer afford what is prescribed, and there is no safety net to supply the need.

12. W/o co-pays, many drugs are hundreds of dollars per month.
No way people of average income can afford that.

14. Even with co-pays psych drugs ...
... may cost hundreds of dollars per month. A family member was placed on (the then new) drug Zyprexa in the late '90s (early 2000?)even with "decent" drug benefits it cost $265 for a 2 week supply.

7. The whole story is just so damn sad
If we had a country where those who are mentally ill could actually get help -- both in the hospital and out -- this may have not happened. We cannot continue in this fashion or we are all bound to pay the price.

13. More victims of the Medicare Prescription Drug Lord Benefit?
If the perpetrator was what is called "dual eligible" -- that is, officially disabled and (formerly) receiving his meds under a combination of Medicare and Medicaid -- he was cut off as of January 1 and may never have been able to resume adequate levels of medication: this not by bureaucratic accident but due to deliberately genocidal elimination policies methodically built into the Medicare Part D program.

And -- truth be known (precisely as we afflicted elders are discovering more bitterly every day) -- the younger public doesn't care: the younger population has now been conditioned to such sociopathic selfish indifference it can no longer relate to elders as fully human, much less grasp the fact that today's smirking yuppie is tomorrow's senior citizen.
