Repugs going after ANWR again
Edited on Wed May-24-06 07:39 PM by sarahlee
Last night I posted an alert about Pombo's plan to force a vote on his "American-Made Energy and Good Jobs Act" (HR 5429), in the General Discussion: Politics forum and it isn't getting much attention.

So I am going to try a cross post here and let it go. I know we are all on outrage overload.

Congressman Kucinich sent out an alert about this early this morning, afraid that it might go up for a vote today. I am now getting emails from various environmental groups - all with their alert links. So they think it is a possible threat. It could come up for a vote tomorrow.

If you have not made still another call, to make sure your reps know you still care, please think about doing so first thing in the morning.

My other post on this.
Pombo Forcing Vote on Arctic Refuge Drilling this Week
Links and details there.

I'm really tired, so what happens with this happens....

Some reccomends on this might help make sure the activists at DU (isn't that just about all of us?) know this is up. I imagine though that others are starting to get the same emails I am from the environmental groups.

14. And when they manage to extract what little oil is there, they
will export it. So no benefit for the American gas consuming public. Who do these morans think they are fooling, anyway? I won't insult douchebags with comparison to greedy corporate CONservatives, but that's just me.

3. How about declaring ANWR a special reserve for oil
Like leave it there in case we have an emergency rather than drain all that we have at once for the good ol' bush boys.

5. I'll hand it to them
they never give up, if the Democrats had half as much tenacity on issues for our side we wouldn't be in such a mess.

7. Aint that the truth
It is a numbers game to them and they have more lobbyists to keep writing these bills up and they just keep throwing the shit knowing that some of it will stick. I am not sure they even care which ones.

The email from the Audubon Public Policy Division, which I posted in the other forum said:
In a frankly political move to help Republicans who may find it useful to tally a vote for Arctic drilling amid concern back home over high gas prices, HR 5429 will be on the floor this week for a straight up or down vote on drilling in the Arctic Refuge.

And that may be all it is. A way to go back home and say, "we tried to lower your gas prices, but those durn Democrats wouldn't let us."

6. ANWR is nothing but busy-work by Repugs
...to make it look like they're doing something about gas prices. Americans who have a hard on over it fail to realize a) it'll be 10 years before we see the "benefit", and b) the "benefit" is estimated to net us a whole 6-month supply of gasoline. In return we'll have done permanent damage to the land and wildlife.

If it doesn't make sense, Repubs are behind it.

10. If you have not called
Call right now. Please.

In the words of Tom DeLay, this isn't about opening up a little slice of the Refuge, it's about precedent. The slippery slope is very much in effect here.

Someone else said: "This thing is like herpes. It never dies." We have to continue to be the medication that keeps it from spreading this time. (And the next and the next)

12. They won....
HR 5429 just passed, I think the vote was Yea, 225; Nay, 20l. It will be awhile before the official roll call is posted.

...and 27 dems defected and voted YES.

House OKs Oil Drilling in Alaska Refuge
WASHINGTON -- Citing the public outcry over $3-a-gallon gasoline and America's heavy reliance on foreign oil, the House voted Thursday to open an Alaska wildlife refuge to oil drilling, knowing the prospects for Senate approval were slim.

Drilling proponents contend that the refuge on Alaska's North Slope would provide 1 million barrels a day of additional domestic oil at peak production and reduce the need for imports.

But opponents to developing what environmentalists argue is a pristine area where drilling will harm caribou, polar bears and migratory birds, said Congress should pursue conservation and alternative energy sources that would save more oil than would be tapped from the refuge.

Thanks to everyone who did make calls.
