Democratic aides say Alito filibuster 'highly unlikely'
Despite hopes in liberal circles that Democratic senators will block the confirmation of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court, several Democratic aides to senators on the Judiciary Committee have privately told RAW STORY that such a prospect is highly unlikely.

After Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT) remarked that a Democratic filibuster was a "definite possibility" late Wednesday, some liberal blogs championed the possibility that Alito might be stopped. But this scenario is unlikely, aides say.

1. That's too bad.
It's a shame some of us have no worth to be represented in government. Screw the citizen for political ambitions.

7. it's so depressing
I turned on AAR this morning and Rachel was lamenting about Democrats not being a strong party. I got angry and shut her off, I don't like it when someone generalizes. my Senator Kennedy is working his butt off. We have to many repubs wearing Dem's clothing.

11. Yes
Senator Kennedy has been fighting and is not scared of a propagandized public nor paralyzed by the opposition.

9. None of us have any representation; not even the Republican
voters are represented by anyone - they are only "supporters" not "constituents". We aren't asked to elect a representative, we are asked to support a political party and neither of the major ones work for our benefit. Maybe this is just a down day...

2. Well, it's a good thing that the aides don't make the policy.
If Lieberman sees any political future, he needs to know that this filibuster may be the only thing between his Senatorial seat and the private sector.

12. Yes, because if an AIDE says it, it must be true
Or maybe a plant to help throw off the republican agenda. They can't go ranting on about Nuclear Option if we're not ranting on about Filibustering

3. Know what?
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 08:38 AM by in_cog_ni_to
I think the Democrats are all saying "a filibuster is unlikely" so they don't give the repuke party a heads up. Remember when Harry Reid took the Senate into an UNEXPECTED CLOSED session? ;) I do.

I think it's their plan of attack.....catch 'em off-guard.

19. Not Me! I gave up on Kerry the very day he conceded.
Yanked his bumper sticker off my car that very day!:grr: I'm STILL PISSED ABOUT IT!:grr:

Really. Think about it. This is a sneak attack. They HAVE to know this man is a danger to the constitution. They will filibuster, but they don't want the repukes to expect it and hit the media with their "Nuclear Option" bullshit. The MEDIA would turn the people against a filibuster if the repukes were given a heads up on it. With the Dems pulling a sneak attack, they can then get out in front of the repukes MSM attacks and stop these rat bastards in their steps.

They will filibuster.....IMCPO ;)

4. I will change my party affiliation if they don't.
I can't be a democrat if they support Alito.

5. Judicial filibuster 'is unlikely,' Durbin says
Judicial filibuster 'is unlikely,' Durbin says
January 13, 2006

WASHINGTON -- Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin said Thursday he is still undecided about whether to vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito, and a filibuster to try to block President Bush's choice for the high court is a long shot. ''When you consider the numbers involved, it is unlikely,'' Durbin said, referring to the apparent lack of support among his fellow senators for such a move.

Durbin has been one of the more aggressive questioners of Alito during his many hours of testimony this week. At one point during Wednesday's questioning -- when Durbin was not directly involved -- Alito's wife, Martha-Ann, left the committee room in tears. ''I'm sorry to see that happen,'' Durbin said Thursday. ''She seems like a very nice person. Her family has stood with her and stood behind the judge during this entire proceeding. I'm sorry if anything happened yesterday that led to this.''

Durbin, the Senate's second highest-ranking Democrat, had his third round of questioning of Alito on Thursday, spending much of his 15 minutes focused on the issue of how the federal government handles political asylum or deportation.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

So... Durbin says he is still UNDECIDED (WTF?), he's SORRY that the hearing made Martha-Ann cry, and he says the Dems don't have the NUMBERS to mount a filibuster???

WTF.

deserve to lose. The sad thing we all pay such a high price.

16. Sometimes, it's
so disappointing to be right all the time. I never thought they had the balls to filibuster, or the brains to pull it off if they did. The Gang of 14 saw to that.

18. I Suspect I'm Going To Need An Armor Suit Around Here Next Week
The natives will be restless...

The natives will not be happy...

The natives will want blood...

The angst will send flames and trolls and locks and tombstones flying all over the place...

But then the next Repugnican scandal will splash and all in the world will seem right again.

:sarcasm:

I do support filibustering this nomination just on the fact this nominee has flaunted his refusal and the "in your face" antics of the Repugnicans in this process. Democrats who fear a fight better get out of the way...many of us are spoiling for a fight and the ranks are growing larger and larger. Support this nominee at your political peril.
