Hasbro Halts Plans For Dolls Based On Risque Music Group

POSTED: 7:56 pm EDT May 24, 2006
UPDATED: 7:58 pm EDT May 24, 2006

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Hasbro Inc. shelved plans Wednesday to release a line of dolls based on the Pussycat Dolls, an all-female music group known for risque lyrics and skimpy outfits.

Hasbro, the nation's second biggest toy maker, said it decided the dolls were "inappropriate" for the company to market and that the pop group catered to a more mature audience.

The move comes amid criticism from a national advocacy group, Dads & Daughters, that had campaigned against the doll line.

The company had reached a deal with Interscope Records, the group's label, to release dolls modeled after the popular sextet -- whose songs include the hit single, "Don't Cha." But it released a statement Wednesday saying it had abandoned plans for the doll line.

4. The name does conjur up some images
which are a tad....well weird.

I probably have not would have paid any attention to it 20 years, but our society seems to have slid a lot since then.

8. I was just going to post that
I just did a search on them and it appears that they're a pretty decent group.

It really sucks that (thanks in part to the Purity Ball people) the name of such a group makes many of us suspicious. :(

"Celebrating a 13 year history of success, New Moon Magazine is for every girl who wants her voice heard and her dreams taken seriously, and for every adult who cares about girls.

Our adult staff works with the Girls Editorial Board to produce an award winning, ad-free and multi-cultural magazine for girls ages 8-14."

Turn Beauty Inside Out
"“Turn Beauty Inside Out” (TBIO) began with the Girls Editorial Board of New Moon® Magazine, a group of 8-14 year olds from Minnesota. In 2000 they decided to produce a special issue of the magazine to counteract and protest People Magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People” issue which focuses on physical appearance and celebrity. They feel such a narrow, exclusive idea of beauty, prevalent in our culture, is very harmful to girls like themselves. So they created the special issue in May of 2000 and were excited by the fantastic response it received from kids and adults alike.

The response inspired them to start the public education campaign now called TBIO so they could reach beyond the magazine’s readership to spread the campaign’s vital message more widely. The campaign quickly grew beyond the ability of New Moon Magazine® to sustain and run it. In 2001, Mind on the Media (MOTM) was created to be the home for TBIO and other media-related actions led by girls."
