Things that MUST happen, or else it's welcome to the third world:
Edited on Wed May-24-06 08:43 PM by Gabi Hayes
Accountable voting procedures at all levels

Single Payer Health Care

Publicly Funded Elections/severe curtailment of professional lobbyist influence

Equitable taxation, including continuation/reform of Inheritance Tax

Immediate implementation of alternate energy/conservation policy (see Jimmy Carter's 1977 speech)

Enforcement of the Constitution
...a) discontinuing of Presidential Signing Statements

others? thoughts? these seem the most important, off the top of my head, but that's about as deep as it gets for me

''From this day on, the official language of the US will be Swedish. Silence! In addition to that, all citizens will be required to change their underwear every half hour. Underwear will be worn on the outside so we can check. Furthermore, all children under 16 years old are now... 16 years old!''

1. Ummmmmmm, How Bout Not Spending Billions On An Illegal War?
And ummmmmmm, not allowing china to own our country with trillions in debt?

Ummmmm, also maybe not isolating ourselves diplomatically from the rest of the world?

Oh, yeah, also responding to emergencies with competence and swiftness?

2. Fairness Doctrine reintroduced.
I want to be optimistic. Your list has me dreaming. The country would flourish just from alternative energy research.

We could have a travelling petting zoo with Jeb, W, Frist, Specter, all in nice little enclosures. :)

5. Vital Addition...

:bluebox: Disassemble the Massive Media Oligopoly; Restore Competition and FCC Regulation with "Fairness Doctrine" again in place.

:redbox: Greater Emphasis On Restoring Federal Revenues/Taxation; Including Retroactive Taxation and Focus on Debt Reduction. This is Imperative.

6. How about some of the following

1. Balance the federal budget until we have run surpluses long enough to reduce the debt by at least 50 percent.

2. Stop corporations from moving to oversea tax havens. Tax them on their earnings here, no matter where they are "from".

3. Develop US based energy industry that is both renewable and non-polluting, start a US federal program to encourage companies to develop the technologies and production of energy here in the US

4. Encourage our "off shore" oursourcing activities to be re-directed to our neighbors here in the western hemisphere, namely Mexico. Also offer world wide population control measures (yup, free condoms for everyone, and free birth control as well)

5. Develop a sane, and limited, guest worker program

6. Re-invest in the Peace corp, with a program of establishing clean water and sanitation and some basic medical treatment for poor people everywhere (including the US).

7. Try to not engage in any more resource wars, try to show the rest of the world a new plan (planned populations, planned usage of resources, planned renewal of overused resources).

8. After we have succeeded in all this, now let's talk about the rest of the new deal agenda (Single payer health care, etc etc)... because until we tackle and solve the meta problem (too many people competing for too few resources), the other things just aren't going to matter.

7. NSA disbanded
Pentagon put on a DIET

Fairness Doctrine reinstituted

Antitrust laws ENFORCED.

Work that PAYS.

This administration on trial, every last corrupt one of them. Make it a show trial, really drag them all through the mud, make an example of them that the enablers of the richest assholes in this country won't forget for a very long time. The only way to keep them from coming back is to throw them into prison.

Oh, and some protectionism is essential to keep what little industry we have left from being raieded by predatory and protectionist countries like India and China.

11. My two cents!
- End corporate handouts! Why should the public help prop up bad businesses and executives too inept to manage their companies responsibly?

- End global handouts! Why should the public help prop up bad governments and national leaders too inept to govern their lands responsibly?

- Total public education reform, from University level to Kindergarten; more money is good only if the system is going to use it effectively.

- Obliterate the political financial lobby in America. When only mega-rich or people with mega-rich friends can get elected to any office of even minor renown, we have a huge problem.

- Give abortion and gay marriage back to the states where it belongs. The federal government should not get involved in either of these two, very hot debates. The reason we have states to begin with is so that differences on important issues can be expressed locally, to the local satisfaction of the local voters.

- Stop giving businesses who use/abuse illegal workers a free ride. First step in securing the border is to remove the nectar from the pitcher plant. When businesses stop using underpayed and non-documented labor, the draw for illegals will go down, while the enticement of a legal status (green card or citizenship) goes way up.

- Reform immigration procedures so that people who want to be in America and can contribute positively to this country, can go through due process without waiting 20 fucking years on account of red tape. This too will ease the flood of illegals.

I have more, if anyone cares.

also we need to round up the whole bush-cheney-rummie-atwater-norquist cabal and wreak harsh judgement on them. harsh enough to eliminate them from our political and economic systems.
