Ha Ha! I totally changed a right wing rant radio show the other night.
So it's about 8:00 p.m. and I'm driving home when this rightwing radio host, Chris something or other, starts up his show ranting and raving about democrats and immigration.

He wants to know why immigration is considered to be a "conservative" issue. He wants someone to tell him "what is the position of the democrats on immigration."

He rants he raves and it's clear that what he's actually doing is blaming democrats for our "immigration problem."

Well as I'm driving listenting to this crap, I start to get very angry.

When I get home I decide to do something I've never done. I call him up.

I get screened naturally but to my surprise they keep me holding. I wait about 15 minutes while he's ranting, stoking it up, taking rightwing callers, getting it to a fever point when he finally decides to let me in.

I start answering his question. "It's considered a conservative issue because of spin and propaganda like you're doing tonight."

"Democrats have absolutely nothing to do with immigration, never have had, never will." "It's big business and the wealthy elite who want this cheap labor to come in here to depress wages and whatnot."

He tries to cut me off but I won't let him. "You guys have the House, the Senate, the Supreme Court, the presidency, you have everything, so it's the republicans fault that immigration is the way it is". "So how the hell do you come off blaming democrats? Republicans created the situation but you are blaming democrats?"

He tries to recover. "But what's the democrats position on it, can you tell me that?" He says.

"The democrats position is irrelevant", I say. "It doesn't matter what they say or do, they have no power. So all you're doing with this radio show is stoking hatred."

Well he finally gets me off when he realizes he can't win. Then the rest of the night, all of his right wing callers start disagreeing with him.

That guy "Solomon really opened my eyes tonight. He made a very good point. Why can't the republicans fix this thing since we have all the power?"

The radio host had to stop bashing democrats, and start bashing "all politicians, democrats and republicans."

My daughter who just finished her second year of college almost killed herself laughing the rest of the night as she saw how I completely changed the show around.

Sorry about the long post. I had to get it off my chest though.

26. The Dems position on immigration.
This was part of the above great rant:

He tries to recover. "But what's the democrats position on it, can you tell me that?" He says.

"The democrats position is irrelevant", I say.

But actually the Dems could have a very simple solution, stated by Molly Ivins and others: ENFORCE THE EXISTING LAWS.

As you indicate in your rant: "It's big business and the wealthy elite who want this cheap labor to come in here to depress wages and whatnot."

So the simple solution: Enforce the laws about hiring illegal immigrants. Arrest the wealthy employers of these immigrants and really stick it to the Rich who are creating the problem. If enough of these guys get arrested and have to cool their heels awhile in prison, the employment end of the equation would dry up and almost instantly the immigrant problem would cease. Presto chango.

That's the only real solution, if you want to stop the immigration. If you want to just moderate it, then you could allow certain worker programs like the bracero program, but even then you'd have to crack down on those EMPLOYERS outside the law, not the poor and uneducated workers who are just doing what anybody in their shoes would do.

And good framing as well. Bring the fight to them instead of always playing defense.
Turn the argument around. Make them face a few obvious facts if they're unhappy about the government.

This is a GOP problem. They've had over five years to do something about it. They've failed and now they're looking for scapegoats.

Don't let them get away with it.

28. It's Fun To Bash These Asshats Around
It's been a couple months since I had my last fun with a wingnut talk show host, but there are plenty to go around and most speak in echo chambers. Just like people here will not listen to anything but Air America, many of these goons haven't heard anything but the Right wing spin on issues for years; festered by talk show hosts hired for their ability to be racist flag-waivers. Most of these "hosts" are un-informed other than the talking points they gleam off of Rushbo or off Faux Noise...thus when they're confronted with facts and forced to confront their own hypocrisies, it's fun to hear them squirm.

Kudos to the poster for bringing some truth to these morons...probably the first time there's been some reality injected on that station in years. I strongly suggest others to do the same...it's not hard to do and can be fun when you get a wingnut host doing the "porky pig" to come up with some moronic spin. Never lose your cool...never sound mad...just be prepared. Some shows actually will move a "librul" caller up cause the host thinks he's got some patsy on the line...those are the ones I really enjoy turning inside out.

I told him Republicans control all of government for 6+ years now. It's their mess.

He said some republicans are not pure republicans and are too far to the left. They're the ones ruining everything. That's a stupid arguement, but that's all the ammo he could come up with. Pretty pathetic.

Many people don't even realize that the Republicans are in the majority in the House & Senate.

Most people don't understand the extent to which the party that is in the majority can control everything that happens - and this Republican House & Senate are *extemely* controlling.

That is a BIG message for 2006:

The Republicans Are In Control of House, Senate & White House

69. Washington, D.C. What was so funny about it is that I knew from
watching how the right wing operates that you have to make your point quickly. He tried to interrupt but I wouldn't let him. I just kept talking when he tried to interrupt, like I couldn't hear him, only he knew I could hear him because I started talking louder to get over him.

He quipped, "I see you're not a great conversationalist are you"? I said, I am when I can finish my point before you ask me a question.

He tried a couple of questions, but I nailed him each time so then he figured he'd be better off letting me go.

His own right wing callers started turning on him at that point, and later in the show he joked about getting beat up.

78. I think the guy calls himself Chris Plank or Chris Plaque or something.
I can never quite remember the last name for some reason. Anyway I noticed he had a stand-in tonight.

The radio station was 6:30 a.m. You know, the same station here that does Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and apparently now in the evening, Chris Platt or something.

One reason I called is that I could see he wasn't as experienced in throwing a person off as Hannity, and O'Reilly and their ilk. He's a rookie.

My instincts worked as when he tried to cut me off, I ignored him and overtalked him until the point got out. Once the point was made he could do nothing. For example, my telling him that all he was really doing was stoking up hatred really hurt him. Because if there's nothing democrats can do about the situation, then why stoke up hatred against them for their views. Their views are irrelevant.

He should have focused on the republican leadership and expressed his anger there. But he was too stupid for that. Until his own audience started to turn on him.

59. Well done! -- The same "flip" can be done with Impeachment
Yes, really.

That's why there will be no "backlash" should the Dems find a spine somewhere. And why the Repubs use of the "oh no, impeach" line has been very targetted and subdued.

The truth is that the rank-and-file lock-stepper hasn't been taught to think, or been persuaded to agree with some political position, they've only been trained to be angry.

That anger is a very loose cannon. It turned toward the bushkid over the ports and can turn and start firing impeachment ammo, over any number of bush crimes, at any time.

Add to that their paranoia (and misogyny) and we should keep whispering; "You can have Pres. Hastert now or Pres. Pelosi later."

They could dump him before the mid-terms (again - yes, really).

61. Now THAT'S An Awesome Story.
Sometimes I think we DU'ers don't take advantage nearly as much as we should the concept of calling in to talk radio and swarming them with our well thought out arguments. It is something every DU'er can participate in and as you've just shown, can be extremely effective at times.

Great job.

62. Oh. My. God.
I HAVE TO DO THAT...but sadly, I dont know any RW radio shows around Jackson, Miss., though I'm sure they're are alot of 'em...debating with my dad on a weekly basis is I guess like talking to a RW radio talk show host?

I was trying to find the link to "Enter and win Breakfast with Fox and Friends!" but sadly, I couldnt. I was going to enter that and pray I won so I could embarrass them on national television in front of all their Freeper viewers.

But I would be wary, I don't have a lot of faith in right-wing hosts to keep their word.

67. There is no way any of them would have the intelligence
that you obviously have. They are unable to clearly express their thought and ideas as you do. It was probably the first time they were ever exposed to true enlightenment. Keep up the good work! Maybe you should start your own show...

...the thing they forgot how to do was to fight back.

Thanks for not "letting it go."

86. Hell, yeah, Solomon!
Nicely done, sir. Here in Colorado, we've got a whackjob on latenights called John Caldera, and I busted his ass about racial profiling , but the same thing happened when I reminded him of our Bill of Rights. I suggested HE might be racially profiled the next time a fundie nut-job decides to kill a doctor with a high powered rifle for providing abortions. "The target suspect will likely be white, conservative, and republican..."

As such, if you've read all the way to here, maybe check out: http://callingallwingnuts.com

I don't get it.

90. related item--Air America caller
I was listening to Ed Schultz yesterday, and a man called in from South Texas. The caller said that his local right-wing shows have been running nothing but "happy news" lately--recipes, local sports, human interest, etc. Nothing about the issues lately, 'cause they can't bash the Democrats for anything!
