Santa Clara County officials seek 400 more poll workers!!

By John Woolfolk
Mercury News

With just about two weeks until the June 6 primary election,

the Santa Clara County registrar of voters is scrambling to sign up 400 more poll workers.

More than 3,000 people already have volunteered to work as election officers at polling places,

but the registrar's office needs more!!!

Election officers are paid an $85 stipend and are responsible for setting up the polling place,

processing voters and providing assistance as requested.

In addition to serving a full day at the polls --

usually 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. -- they also must attend a training class.

Bilingual volunteers, especially those who speak Spanish,

are particularly needed and earn an extra $5.

Without more volunteers, polling places could be short-staffed.

Anyone registered to vote in California can be an election officer.

2. I just served as a poll worker in WV
I was glad to do it. It was a VERY long day (no lunch break, we supplied our own food and drink) but the experience was very rewarding. I will say, though, that California needs to open up the piggy bank. $85 bucks isn't much for a 16 hour day. Here in WV poll workers are paid $150 plus more for the preparatory class and a bonus for serving as a messenger.
