DU Wake Up Call: Does your name fit in the blank space??
Edited on Thu May-25-06 07:35 AM by Justice
This was a reply by a DUer to another DUer this morning. Read this reply, and consider whether your name fits in the blank space. I am not trying to incite anyone - so I have removed the names - but this message is a powerful and sobering one. We've gotten a little snarky here lately. Knock it off folks. We need to direct all of our anger where it properly belongs, and not to each other.

Title: I am the mother of a soldier in Iraq

I don't the have time or the inclination to insult, ridicule or ire every DU member who does not agree with me.. I direct my anger toward those people responsible, the ones in the white house...

I am so ashamed of you right now ___________________ and I want you to know that. If you honestly think you are furthering the cause of the Dems, you need to take a good long look at yourself, cause you are alienating people right and left with your sarcastic, oh I am so enlightened but the rest of you are not posts.

I don't talk about this much but I have (a disease), thus the name <______>, cause many of my days are like that.. I spend my good days working to relieve the burden of our soldiers, by organizing and arranging gift boxes. I also write to several soldiers in my Son's unit who have nobody. In addition to that, I am wife, mother of a little girl, and owner of a website in which I make graphics for the public for free, and a web designer...

It doesn't matter what you or anyone else here says, I reserve my anger toward those responsible...

Edit because some of my editing did not work!

1. Wow - it's powerful to be sure.
I commend her actions - we need more like her.

War is never pretty - she is doing what a good mother would do. who would take charge against that?

2. That's why I propose we make this an agreement board
Edited on Thu May-25-06 07:53 AM by bryant69
rather than a discussion board. We should only post on those topics we agree with - and in that way this will be a positive uplifting board.

3. I try to do just that, but sometimes you just have to say something
I learned early on if you want a war with words just come here and post inaccurate or incomplete info, and brother you are toast. I come to DU because I want to learn and share what little I might be fortunate to have.
peace

4. There are very, very few
topics that everyone agrees on. Having differences of opinion is usually a good thing, and allows people the opportunity to compare ideas. That's a good thing.

Malcolm X used to tell us that people are thirsty for good ideas. If we place our clean glass of water on the counter of public discussion, next to our opposition's dirty glass of water, we can be confident that all of those with healthy minds will pick the clean water to drink.

A problem becomes evident when some people feel the need to try to soil the other people's glass of water. That happens on the corporate media talk shows, and sadly, happens on DU. A further problem, one that the OP addressed, is when one person is incapable of recognizing that everything isn't about them.

10. more thoughtfulness
from H20 Man . . .

Thanks for the Malcom X wisdom.

On sobering thing about posting here is to find that, although this is a site for folks with similar political views and voting patterns, there are going to be disagreements; even on those issues and views we tell ourself are above reproach or criticism.

It's frustrating, but my view on this (folks will disagree) is that our critics give us an opportunity to further flesh out our own opinions. Everyone here has had moments of absolute surety, only to later find something was obscured; our point falters, fails. This board is a resource for getting the story right. It just may not happen with the initial posting. That's what the other voices are here for.

Use that energy (and the disagreements) constructively and you can only enhance your views. Come in here defensive, chip on shoulder, and you will find a flood of folks willing to oblige you with the same.

6. An echo chamber. How Orwellian.
Good luck with that.

And FYI, disagreements between like-minded people are not by definition "negative".
