THE WALL, see what PINK FLOYD meant and why governments banned the album
Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall was banned in South Africa because of government fear that it might be used as a song of liberty by black school children and others suppressed by an aristocratic regime that ignored civil liberties.

In this multi-part series, graphics will cover a wide range of issues currently facing America today. Songs will appear in the order Pink Floyd intended.

In the Flesh?

(Waters) 3:17

"....we came in?"

So ya
Thought ya
Might like to go to the show.

To feel the warm thrill of confusion

That space cadet glow.

Tell me is something eluding you, sunshine?

Is this not what you expected to see?

If you wanna find out what's behind these cold eyes

You'll just have to claw your way through this disguise.

"Lights! Turn on the sound effects! Action!"

"Drop it, drop it on 'em! Drop it on them!!!!!"

1. Good job on this. The Wall is one of my favorite albums & movies
although depressing at times - but then again so is what is going on. Are we are just another brick in the wall?

3. All that you touch
All that you see
All that you taste
All you feel.
All that you love
All that you hate
All you distrust
All you save.
All that you give
All that you deal
All that you buy,
beg, borrow or steal.
All you create
All you destroy
All that you do
All that you say.
All that you eat
And everyone you meet
All that you slight
And everyone you fight.
All that is now
All that is gone
All that's to come
and everything under the sun is in tune
but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.

"There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark."

6. SINCE SOME SONGS ARE SHORT, I'LL DO 2 TO A THREAD SOME DAYS

The Thin Ice

(Waters) 2:28

Momma loves her baby

And daddy loves you too.

And the sea may look warm to you babe

And the sky may look blue

But ooooh Baby

Ooooh baby blue

Oooooh babe.
http://www.dlbfilms.com/-fzpage/FZ,-Hiroshima-survivor.jpg

If you should go skating

On the thin ice of modern life

Dragging behind you the silent reproach

Of a million tear-stained eyes

Don't be surprised when a crack in the ice

Appears under your feet.

You slip out of your depth and out of your mind

With your fear flowing out behind you

As you claw the thin ice.

12. Goosebumps!
I just watched Alan Parker's film last weekend on HD - that song "The Thin Ice" is chilling to the bone. I love me some Pink Floyd!

What's strange about the movie vs. the album: some songs from the album didn't make it to the movie. Some songs from the album were changed from the movie version. Some songs were written specifically for the movie. And some songs were identical to the album version.

Bob Geldof's hotel-room-trashing scene during "One of My Turns" is one of my favorite scenes in this, one of the only musicals I can stomach.

25. Actually it was the live show where the songs were added
Edited on Thu May-25-06 06:53 PM by walldude
They were clipped for space on the album but the "extra songs" were always part of The Wall, it was really designed as a piece of "theater" and they had to clip stuff to fit it on 2 albums. The original vision for the movie was to use the entire stage show with some added video. The few songs that were actually cut from the wall made it to the "Final Cut" CD. Most notably being the song "The Gunners Dream":

"Gunners Dream"

floating down through the clouds
memories come rushing up to meet me now
in the space between the heavens
and in the corner of some foreign field
i had a dream
i had a dream
goodbye max
goodbye ma
after the service when you're walking slowly to the car
and the silver in her hair shines in the cold november air
you hear the tolling bell
and touch the silk in your lapel
and as the tear drops rise to meet the comfort of the band
you take her frail hand
and hold on to the dream
a place to stay
enough to eat
somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street
where you can speak out loud
about your doubts and fears
and what's more no-one ever disappears
you never hear their standard issue kicking in your door
you can relax on both sides of the tracks
and maniacs don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control
and everyone has recourse to the law
and no-one kills the children anymore
and no-one kills the children anymore
night after night
going round and round my brain
his dream is driving me insane
in the corner of some foreign field
the gunner sleeps tonight
what's done is done
we cannot just write off his final scene
take heed of the dream
take heed

39. Wow.
I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan, but somehow have not listened to any of Waters' solo stuff. I understand he wrote most of Floyd's classics; it makes sense that his post-Floyd releases would be excellent. I do believe I have picked out my next CD purchase. Thanks!

15. I had the good fortune to be up on the wall around Brandenburg Gate
in Berlin, the night the Berlin Wall fell. I will never forget the floodlights, the intenational news crews, the thousands of people up on the wall, looking down onto a row of East German soldiers sent to keep us from hopping over. We handed them down flowers and candles, and they would occasionally break formation to take them from us. All the while, Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' was being sung in unison by thousands of people.

5. Childhood's End ~ Obscured by Clouds

You shout in your sleep.
Perhaps the price is just too steep.

Is your conscience at rest if once put to the test?
You awake with a start to just the beating of your heart.

Just one man beneath the sky,
Just two ears, just two eyes.
You set sail across the sea of longpast thoughts and memories.

Childhood's end,
Your fantasies merge with harsh realities.

And then as the sail is hoist,
You find your eyes are growing moist.

All the fears never voiced say you have to make your final choice.

Who are you and who am I to say we know the reason why?

Some are born;
Some men die beneath one infinite sky.

There'll be war, there'll be peace.

But everything one day will cease.

All the iron turned to rust;
All the proud men turned to dust.

And so all things, time will mend.
So this song will end.

20. This thread has real potential.
Maybe as an encore, you could visually annotate an earlier gem from Waters:

Us, and them
And after all
We're only ordinary men

Me, and you
God only knows its not what we would choose
To do

Forward he cried from the rear
And the front rank died

And the generals sat
And the lines on the map
Moved from side to side

Black and blue
And who knows which is which
And who is who?

Up and down
But in the end its only
Round and round

Haven't you heard?
It's a battle of words!
The poster bearer cried

Listen son, said the man with the gun
There's room for you inside

<spoken>
I mean, theyre not gonna kill ya, so if you give em a quick, short, sharp, shock, they won't do it again. Dig it? I mean, he get off lightly, 'cos I would've given him a thrashing - I only hit him once!

It was only a difference of opinion, but really...i mean good manners dont cost nothing do they, eh?
</spoken>

Down and out
It can't be helped
But there's a lot of it about

With, without
And who'll deny
It's what the fighting's all about?

Out of the way, it's a busy day
I've got things on my mind
For want of the price of tea and a slice
The old man died

Edited on Thu May-25-06 06:44 PM by walldude
From the album "Amused To Death" This one was written for Poppy..

On edit: Waters has 2 albums coming out this year, if you think Neil Young and The Dixie Chicks are pissed off you ain't seen nothing yet!

ROGER WATERS
The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range

You have a natural tendency
To squeeze off a shot
You're good fun at parties
You wear the right masks
You're old but you still
Like a laugh in the locker room
You can't abide change
You're at home an the range
You opened your suitcase
Behind the old workings
To show off the magnum
You deafened the canyon
A comfort a friend
Only upstaged in the end
By the Uzi machine gun
Does the recoil remind you
Remind you of sex
Old man what the hell you gonna kill next
Old timer who you gonna kill next
I looked over Jordan and what did I see
Saw a U.S. Marine in a pile of debris
I swam in your pools
And lay under your palm trees
I looked in the eyes of the Indian
Who lay on the Federal Building steps
And through the range finder over the hill
I saw the frontline boys popping their pills
Sick of the mess they find
On their desert stage
And the bravery of being out of range
Yeah the question is vexed
Old man what the hell you gonna kill next
Old timer who you gonna kill next
Hey bartender over here
Two more shots
And two more beers
Sir turn up the TV sound
The war has started on the ground
Just love those laser guided bombs
They're really great
For righting wrongs
You hit the target
And win the game
From bars 3,000 miles away
3,000 miles away
We play the game
With the bravery of being out of range
We zap and maim
With the bravery of being out of range
We strafe the train
With the bravery of being out of range
We gained terrain
With the bravery of being out of range
With the bravery of being out of range
We play the game
With the bravery of being out of range

36. That's my song...
Thanks for posting that, I was thinking the exact same thing. "Amused to Death" is probably Roger Waters greatest album, and it is also one of his most underappreciated. Everyone owes it to themselves to go out and buy the album, it might take a few listenings for some people to really get into it but when you really start picking apart the lyrics and music you really realize just how brilliant the album is.

30. This is the greatest DU thread I have ever seen...
Edited on Thu May-25-06 09:53 PM by MN Against Bush
And I have looked at many more DU threads than my post count may indicate. I am a huge Pink Floyd fan, and I think Roger Waters is among the greatest musicians who ever lived. I have thought that for a long time, but this thread helps me to recognize his greatness more than ever before. You have seen things in these lyrics that I never even caught, and you have related it to modern America in a brilliant fashion.

I hope that Roger Waters sees this somehow because I think he would love it.

He has been very under appreciated in recent years, but I think his next album is going to blow some people's minds. I haven't heard very much yet, but given his past work and his political conscious I think we are going to see an album that has a profound effect on many people.

Kicked and recommended, I hope everyone else that sees this does the same.

On Edit: Damn I don't have enough posts to recommend a thread, I hope someone will do it in my place.

37. Or you could post the lyrics for Corporal Clegg written by Roger Waters
in 1968 from the Pink Floyd album Saucerful of Secrets probably the earliest Anti-war and critical of the military system song that Roger wrote. You can almost hear hints of Darkside of the Moon, The Wall and The Final Cut transpiring from that song.
