House debating ANWAR drilling, AGAIN, under closed debate rules, CSPAN
A representative from Oregon provided a good analogy for the fact that the mere 2000 acres to be drilled in ANWAR need not be contiguous.

He said it is like saying a gulf course only takes up, disturbs 4 square feet or so, if you only count the holes (ie drilling).

It's hard to find a way to convey that idea, but he did it.

The thing is, of course, if you drill a small part of one acre or block of land, it relegates the entire block or acre as no longer pristine wilderness.

The bill has some pie in the sky name, you know the framing thing the GOP does so well. Like the wonderful energy supply and great jobs bill.

1. Closed debate rules-any reason given for that?
Does that mean they're not being televised/made public?

2. It is on CSPAN. It is S.O.P. for the House GOP'ers to do that.
One of many reasons why Dems in the House have a very hard time.

DeLay brought such a wonderful atmosphere to that Legislative body.

5. If it's on CSPAN, do you know what
"closed debate rules" means? Honest question because I don't.

17. I'm not completely sure. But among the things that tend to happen
is a severely restricted time for debate, as well as not allowing any amendments to the bill to come to the floor.

20. Per CSPAN: Closed Rule
"A Closed Rule bans amendments to a bill on the House floor, with the exception of Committee amendments.
Committee amendments are approved in advance by a committee and offered by its chairman or his/her designee.

10. Oh, they're not being truthful! Whatta surprise
I think it was last month's NatGeo that had an article about ANWR and other Alaskan drilling sites in it. Once they get into a place there's a gradual sprawl of buildings and equipment to support the operation. It looks horrible, destroys the landscape and impacts wildlife.

The return on ANWR (10 years down the road) is estimated to be a 6-month supply of oil. SIX MONTHS. The environmental impact will last much longer and may even be permanent.

Another great Republican idea.

11. It's a sham bill aimed at constituents
the Major oil companies have publicly stated that drilling there is not profitable. Several have pulled out of Alaska completely. A Dem said this on the floor this morning, but I didn't catch who. (I got distracted by the GUILTY Verdicts in the Enron trial. :) )

12. I was on a trip with a couple of naturalists from Alaska, as well
as a lot of other folks.

In fact one of them does some writing for National Geographic.

They verified the same facts you cite, when I brought them up.

What you say about the sprawl also relates to the 2000 acre decption. See the opening post for the Oregon Rep's analogy regarding that.

House OKs Oil Drilling in Alaska Refuge
WASHINGTON -- Citing the public outcry over $3-a-gallon gasoline and America's heavy reliance on foreign oil, the House voted Thursday to open an Alaska wildlife refuge to oil drilling, knowing the prospects for Senate approval were slim.

Drilling proponents contend that the refuge on Alaska's North Slope would provide 1 million barrels a day of additional domestic oil at peak production and reduce the need for imports.

But opponents to developing what environmentalists argue is a pristine area where drilling will harm caribou, polar bears and migratory birds, said Congress should pursue conservation and alternative energy sources that would save more oil than would be tapped from the refuge.
