LOL! An ad for a 'Do it yourself' FEMA kit?
So I'm scanning over the google ads now showing up here, and I see this one:

Trauma Kit – 500 Person Trauma Kit for Mass Casualties
Mass Casualty kit for cities Everything you need to help
www.alwaysbeprepared.com

Well, I never realized I needed one of those, but I sure hope SOMEONE brings one to our next local disaster!

They're probably geared toward schools and other institutions, but I find it both funny and sad that they are also mass marketing them to the general public. A first aid kit is one thing, but a 500 person trauma kit?

Now all I need is to find an ad for 'instant set-up household levee kits', and I'll be all set...

Here's another intriguing one I just spotted:

Iraq
100,000 Stores. Deals.
Reviews. Iraq & More.
yahoo.com

Iraq & More? More what?

Sorry, sometimes these things just strike me as funny...

That is all. Carry on.

5. Do you expect to have to care for 500 people? By yourself?
Hey, it's not as if we're not prepared here in the midwest. We have tornadoes and blizzards. Most of us with any smarts always have first aid kits, flashlights, water jugs, canned goods, etc...

However, I really don't forsee myself having to provide trauma care for 500 people. I expect to help my neighbors, but not 3 square blocks of my city. That's what my government is for. That's why I pay taxes.

Last time I scanned the DU homepage, there were up to 3 ads at a time for this 500 person mass casualty trauma kit. They seem to envision regular people (ie., not first responders) buying these things. THAT is what I find so odd...

7. I am a Red Cross Volunteer Disaster Shelter Manager
Edited on Thu May-25-06 01:39 PM by Coastie for Truth
Lived in Tornado Alley for 8 years (in the Volunteer Fire Dept) and in the I-80/I-90 Blizzard Belt, and run shelters with 80-120 people in them.

But I do think this was an attempt to extract some value from out dated VFD stuff.

6. And another thing, on a far more serious note
I looked at the stuff that's included. They shouldn't be marketing this to the general public. This kit does not come with a trained paramedic in the box. There's stuff in there that you really need training to handle, such as:

1 Emergency air way set ( 4 piece )
1 Rubber tourniquet
4 Cervical coil

and also:
8 Body bags
(Eight body bags!?)

Is it wise for someone without medical responder training to even try to use some of these things?

I have first aid materials on hand that are appropriate to my training (basically just Boy Scout and CPR training). Compression bandages, topical antibiotic, etc... I'm not about to start suturing people up, nor inserting emergency airways. I think it would also be very unwise for me to try to put a cervical coil on someone who might actually need one. I'd probably break their neck worse.

What I think they are doing, given the hodgepodge nature of the kit, is trying to move surplus medical supplies by capitalizing on people's fears. And that's not so funny. Especially when somebody loses a limb due to untrained application of a tourniquet.

8. I think you're right
but you need bunch of "central points" for the stuff (such as, where the Red Cross or Salvation Army shelter will be) because when the "fit hits the shan" it goes fast - also the Red Cross has a second/third level of training that gets you to a point where you can support life - (and not aggravate the situation) - until somebody trained gets there

10. You never know when you might need to cut something up...
...in a room full of natural gas.

Happens all the time, I've heard. Just not to anyone I know personally...
