Heads up: Countdown/KO on at 9 p.m. tonight
After the Shrub and Tony's Dog and Pony Show

He'll be discussing the Waas article and Cheney's possible testimony

------------------------------------------------------
Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

PROGRAM NOTE: Countdown on 9 pm eastern tonight, because of the President's evening news conference with Tony Blair. The show will be airing an hour later in all other times zones as well. (The re-air on the West coast will be the usual time, however.) It's a big newsy day! Don't miss Countdown!

Could Vice President Dick Cheney be a star prosecution witness in the perjury trial of his former chief of staff? Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald suggested in a court filing Wednesday that Cheney would be a logical witness for the prosecution because the vice president could authenticate notes he jotted on a copy of a New York Times opinion column by a critic of the U.S.-led war in Iraq. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/25/AR2006052500213.html

Murray Waas, who has broken so many key stories in the Plame/CA leak case for the National Journal, has been rather quiet this month, but emerged today with another bombshell. On September 29, 2003, three days after it became known that the CIA had asked the Justice Department to investigate who leaked the name of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame, "columnist Robert Novak telephoned White House senior adviser Karl Rove to assure Rove that he would protect him from being harmed by the investigation, according to people with firsthand knowledge of the federal grand jury testimony of both men," Waas writes."Suspicious that Rove and Novak might have devised a cover story during that conversation to protect Rove, federal investigators briefed then-Attorney General John Ashcroft on the matter in the early stages of the investigation in fall 2003, according to officials with direct knowledge of those briefings.... http://www.mediainfo.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1002575957

Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann broadcasts LIVE at 8 pm et, and the count is never complete without you. Join us.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert accused the Justice Department Thursday of trying to intimidate him in retaliation for criticizing the FBI's weekend raid on a congressman's office, escalating a searing battle between the executive and legislative branches of government. "This is one of the leaks that come out to try to, you know, intimidate people," Hastert said on WGN radio Thursday morning. "We're just not going to be intimidated on it." http://msnbc.msn.com/id/12973390/

President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair are unlikely to announce troop withdrawals when they meet on Thursday to discuss the way ahead in Iraq after formation of a unity government there, the White House said. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/25/AR2006052500939.html

Former Enron Corp. chiefs Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling were convicted Thursday of conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud in one of the biggest business scandals in U.S. history. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12968481/

Fox's two-hour special that resulted in Alabama's Taylor Hicks being crowned the fifth "American Idol" was a big hit among viewers, drawing an audience of 35.4 million people, Nielsen Media Research said.During the last half hour of "Idol," where Hicks' victory over Katharine McPhee was announced, just under 43 million people were tuned in, Nielsen said. That makes it the second most-watched "Idol" finale ever, behind only 2003's competition, and beats last year's contest won by Carrie Underwood. Last year's audience was 30.3 million. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12956943/

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- There's at least one couple who isn't upset that America's most popular TV show has finished its fifth season. Dorothy and Jerry Few are tired of getting calls from people who believe they're phoning in a vote for their favorite "American Idol" contestant. The Fews' phone number closely resembles the toll-free number Fox uses to let viewers vote for their favorite contestants. The voting lines begin 1-866-436-57XX - or 1-866-IDOLSXX - with the last two digits corresponding to a singer. Ethel Boling, 79, also has phone number with the 866 prefix and said she had been getting eight to 10 wrong numbers a week from "Idol" fans. But as a fellow "Idol" watcher, she doesn't mind the misdials. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/I/IDOL_WRONG_NUMBERS?SITE=NWCN&TEMPLATE=STRANGEHEADS.html&SECTION=HOME

1. Thanks for the heads up on KO tonight
His show is usually the only bright spot on an otherwise dismal "news" network.

2. Oh, boy! KO is going to have a ball with the Novak story. He can't
stand "journalists" like Novak and I'll bet he holds him in contempt almost equal to his contempt for O'Lielly.

Should be fun!

8. a KO question:
What is the piece of music that plays off the "Worst Person in the World" segment? I should know this and it's killing me that I can't name it off the tip of my tongue...

9. That classical piece? The organ?
Edited on Thu May-25-06 02:24 PM by Patsy Stone
It's Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, I think.
