Something is seriously wrong with these Google Ads. All I'm seeing is
...the same ads that you see if you mistakenly go to a RW political site.

I hope it's O.K. to discuss this on a GD thread, but I haven't see one yet, that I would dare click on.

Maybe they need to fix the algorithm or something, I'm not sure how Google chooses what ad to place, but these seem wrong to me.

6. They do seem to be improving, so I hope you are right.
A lot of these take you to very deceptive sites.

boxer" one there from some PAC (I think).

4. Click on 'em all! They get charged by the click regardless of
whether you buy anything. I take the Repub snail mail and send pizza coupons back to 'em. Anything to use up the budget!

8. all I ask is that they don't bounce.
there are sites where I have to tape paper to half the screen so I can read the other half because of a distractive, moving, bouncing ad.

20. Here's something you might want to test, they have a 30-Day free trial
<http://www.intermute.com/products/adsubtract.html>

"AdSubtract" gets rid of most of the really annoying ads. I've used it for about 4 years now.

9. Context sensitive ads...
If we talk about RW trash, Google sees that context and gives ads that seem to match.

Don't worry about this; It is normal, and means we are sucking in money from those RW advertisers!

I think its sort of cool.

21. How funny! I know that I talk more about B*, Rove, Cheney and
evil crew than I do about any single Democrat! And I think this holds for DU GD as well! You're saying that Google recognizes DU as a RW site, because of all the references to B* cabal?

 !!!!

23. Well, a pattern matching program "knows" nothing.
But yes, it think we must want to see ads that have those context keywords.

12. There was some discussion yesterday about previous ads a few
years ago. It seems ad placement is partly determined by the number of times words or phrases are used. Since we spend a lot of time excoriating Rethugs, there will be some ads that are meant to appeal to Rethugs. (Hey, does "Rethugs" register as part of sthe word count?)

...the proper names of the people we a bitching about.

Maybe someone here should register "ReThuglican .com" before it's taken.

14. I had the same issue with a GMail account
I contacted them and explained and someone "fixed" it for me - I haven't seen a single RW ad since.

They use some kind of "concordance" analysis - it basically counts the number of times a political term is used, assigns it a relevance and drops it through some guessing software to find the ads most likely to earn a click.

The problem with political websites and conversation is that we're often talking about what we dislike more than what we like, so that's what they think we're interested in clicking on.

18. Who cares? The only one benefitting is DU!
And the right-wing advertisers are LOSING out because they're paying for clicks from people who will obviously never become customers..

On the other hand, when you click on liberal ads to support DU, you're actually making the progressive site pay dearly.

I'd say its better if most of the ads are right-wing ones..

19. I saw an ad for...
Free Republic twice already. Nah, just kidding. I think it goes by key words and "War on Terror" posts are going to bring up a lot of military ads. The system picks up on a few key words not the context of them. They borrowed the process from the NSA. :)
