I wanted to fill you in on a series of events happening nationwide in support of my bill, HR 676, the United States Health Insurance Act, which would establish an American-styled national insurance program. The bill would create a publicly financed, privately delivered health care program that uses the already existing Medicare program by improving and expanding it to all U.S. residents.
Healthcare NOW is leading the organizing for these grassroots events designed to raise awareness among the general public and our elected officials on the benefits of a single-payer healthcare system. which will all occur on June 7th, the National Action Day. Some of the events include:
* The Raging Grannies will be singing and protesting the lack of comprehensive healthcare along with Healthcare-NOW activists in hospital gowns at the Mariners game in Seattle.
* The California Nurses Association and Los Angeles activists will take a walking tour along a corridor of insurance companies to protest their profiting on the backs of the sick.
* In Tyler, Texas activists will meet with MoveOn activists to call for national single payer health care as one of their national priorities.
* In Montgomery, Alabama activists and leaders will have a national livecast to talk about healthcare issues affecting their state.
* Healthcare NOW together with New York City doctors, unions and faith groups will be calling on people to support a NY City Council resolution in support of H.R. 676 and a premiere of the new film, "Don't Be a Chicken."
* Jobs with Justice and United for National Healthcare members will hold H.R. 676 banners on freeways and bridges in Bellingham, Washington.
