1. it depends on the taxes and type of fuel.
the same gas isn't used across the country- certain areas dictate by law that certain mixtures/additives be used.

just looking at a map of prices doesn't tell the whole story.

so- what's your point?

2. Oh but there is not price fixing going on
Why did prices jump 15 - 20 cents on Thursday? Just in time for the Holiday weekend?

We the people are being screwed so many ways.

This is what you get with a corrupt government that was begotten by the energy industry

3. The only alternative is to nationalize the energy companies
if you want gas to be priced the same across America.

BTW, the map would be all red if that happened.

I can drive 3 miles and pay 5 cents less because of a county surcharge where I live.

15. The same government that handled Katrina...
in charge of our oil companies. Boy! That sure reassures the hell out of me. Nationalized ANYTHING is the worst thing that could ever happen. Like the Post Office is a bastion of government efficiency.

11. All I can say is WTF
I know that red states are more rural and that may explain some of it. I dont see how nationalization of oil and gas would change the political landscape and make all states red - it would give the states that are now blue some gas relief and protection from these predatory practices

13. Those are states with low taxes.
Which means lower prices, but also poor schools and ignorant voters.

It's as expected, I think.

16. Those Bastards!
Damn them for not paying as much as everyone else!

In Texas schools are funded through property taxes and the state lottery and they are damned good.

17. Really? I thought Texas ranked 24th in the nation.
I didn't mean to imply that any state funds schools through gasoline taxes, but rather that low taxes in general (income, property, sales) lead to less funding for schools.

Property taxes in Texas or South Carolina are much lower than in New York or Connecticut, for example.

18. I like the low taxes in Texas...
In fact I wish they were lower. Yes. I said that. I wish the taxes were lower. I have seen not one single thing from our government to inspire confidence that if I sent them more money they would know what to do with it.

I think we should revolt and keep ALL of our money. I am talking everyone, from Bill Gates on down. Everyone just not give the government anymore money and when they come crawling back, their hat in their hand, begging, we give them maybe 10% of what we were giving them before, for ONE YEAR. If they are frugal and spend it wisely, then next year we give them the same amount plus a little more, with the understanding that they can get completely cut off at any time.

If the government is going to take my money and just blow it, I'd rather just blow it myself. There are plenty of strippers around who need college money and could put that money to better use.

19. Really, 24th?
That's quite encouraging, since there's a very large section of the student body that enters with piss-poor language skills and, to use the usual euphemism, home lives that don't predispose them to school. A lot of smaller, rural schools, too.

8. It's not my fault
your state is the one doing goofy stuff with additive mandates. states decide their own state gas tax. Also consider, 40k is alot of money in Nebraska, but you'd probably be living in a studio apartment with 4 other guys if you made 40k in LA.

12. Fair? A fair is where you take your pig and hope to win a prize...

seriously, more transportation costs, different fuel blends, different tax rates, it would seem unfair if it all costed the same everywhere.

14. Gas prices by zip code.......
This is pretty nifty.
Just enter your zip code in the site below, and it tells you which gas stations have the cheapest prices (and the highest) on gas in your zip code area. It's updated every evening. Just click on the link. You will see a map of your area and then scroll down and you will get a listing of gas prices in your area with addresses and brands starting with the cheapest and going up.

http://autos.msn.com/everyday/gasstations.aspx?zip=&sr! c=Netx

Be a good neighbor and pass this along ..
