Desperate, scandal-ridden Ney's homophobic robocall

I first heard about scandal-ridden Bob Ney's bigoted robocall against opponent Zack Space in this post at Buckeye State Blog. It seems Bob Ney, who is constantly in the news due to investigations into his possible ethics violations and ties to lobbyist Jack Abramoff, is falling back on the standard tactic of the truly desperate Republican--appealing to people's fears and prejudices. (Side note: see editorial Nervous GOP focuses on hot buttons) Rachel Maddow has a rough transcript of the robocall, as well as her own commentary on the matter posted here.

"Hello, my name is Juanita (?) and I am very concerned about what I've heard recently about Congressional Candidate Zack Space. Zack claims to care about Ohio Values. He has been spending a lot of time lately with national liberal and gay rights leaders to raise money for his campaign. Just last week Zack was on an ultra-liberal radio show from New York City hosted by a cross dressing lesbian when he told me that social values are no longer that important. Zack Space claims the 18th District wants a progressive leader. But we all know that progressive is nothing more than a code word for higher taxes, more gun control, more abortions, and more gay marriages. Tell Zack Space that social values do matter to those of us in Ohio. Even if they don't matter to his ultra-liberal friends in the rest of the country. Paid for by Bob Ney for Congress"

I still can't figure that one out. I guess "lesbian" in and of itself is not threatening enough any more, so he needed to up the "freak factor".

Once upon a time, he would have thrown "commie" in there too, just for good measure.

3. Blackwell Intends to Steal It for Ney. Homophobia Will Be The Cover Story

This is OHIO we're talking about here, where they can steal 30%+ and nobody bats an eyelash.

No, the people Ohio are not really so homophobic that they'd vote for a crook like Ney
even after everybody knows he's a crook, but the media has most Ohioans convinced that
their neighbors would.

When they "win" again thorough massive electoral fraud, the media will say it's because
we're not "relating to" all the homophobes, or because we're not anti-abortion enough,
or whatever, and watch our party tear itself apart some more.

7. I Have No Doubt That A Majority Of Ohio Voters Will (Try To) Vote for Zack

I also have no doubt that Blackwell will flip every race he can.
He wants to be governor, of course, and if he can keep Congress in Rethug
hands, they will owe him, big time.

There can also be no doubt that the media stands ready to explain away
the Red Shift, however huge and improbable it may be. That is Karl Rove's
job today -- to plant the stories of a huge mass of right-wing zombies who
are horrified at the thought that Democrats might take over and impeach the
Dear Leader, and let gays marry, etc. Such people exist, of course, but not
in the numbers that we are led to believe. The media has to build them up
into something that looks like a majority on TV.

It seems more than likely that the Rethugs will continue with a strategy
that has "won" them 3 elections in a row.

How do we stop them from stealing it again?
We have tried flooding the state with poll-watchers, we have tried referenda
to clean up the electoral process, we have tried taking them to court.

I don't think I'm being defeatist. Those who say we have to buy into bigotry
to win are the ones who are being defeatist.

I'm saying we have to have honest elections. Then we will win.
