Failed States: The Abuse of Power and the Assault on Democracy
Noam Chomsky

From the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Noam Chomsky talks to West Point cadets about just war theory and the invasion of Iraq. During the talk, Professor Chomsky criticizes the work of Michael Walzer, an influential proponent of just war theory and the author of the popular "Just and Unjust Wars." Following his remarks, Professor Chomsky takes questions from the cadets about international law and the Bush administration's foreign policy.

Noam Chomsky, a professor of linguistics and philosophy at MIT, is the author of numerous books on U.S. foreign policy, including "American Power and the New Mandarins," "Pirates and Emperors, Old and New: International Terrorism in the Real World," and "Hegemony or Survival." For more information on Prof. Chomsky and his work, visit www.zmag.org/Chomsky.

9. We don't get a chance too, unless we search him out ourselves...
When was the last time you saw him on US TV? (not counting today)

I NEVER have, but he's on TV in other countries all the time.

10. He's so much easier to follow when he writes than when he speaks...
at least for me. I can go back and re-read when he starts to lose me.

I wish I'd thought to tape this. I know I'm not grasping it all. :(

11. A Just War? Hardly May 20, 2006
By Noam Chomsky

Spurred by these times of invasions and evasions, discussion of "just war" has had a renaissance among scholars and even among policy-makers.

Concepts aside, actions in the real world all too often reinforce the maxim of Thucydides that "The strong do as they can, while the weak suffer what they must" — which is not only indisputably unjust, but at the present stage of human civilisation, a literal threat to the survival of the species.

In his highly praised reflections on just war, Michael Walzer describes the invasion of Afghanistan as "a triumph of just war theory," standing alongside Kosovo as a "just war." Unfortunately, in these two cases, as throughout, his arguments rely crucially on premises like "seems to me entirely justified," or "I believe" or "no doubt."

Facts are ignored, even the most obvious ones. Consider Afghanistan. As the bombing began in October 2001, President Bush warned Afghans that it would continue until they handed over people that the US suspected of terrorism.

12. Interesting tone from the students during Q&A...
They sure don't like him saying that "just war" is a failed theory.

19. News Article on the speech
http://www.thejournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060421/NEWS03/604210331/1024/NEWS08

Excerpt:

At the end of his presentation, the military academy's class of 2008 presented Chomsky with a framed picture of a part of the campus.

Lt. Col. Casey Neff, a staff member for the academy's commandant's office, said he too enjoyed Chomsky's lecture.

Neff said Chomsky was at West Point to state a position and provoke debate.

The free speech of Chomsky and others, he said, "is one of the things we're here to defend."
