Election's once-a-century date shows devilish side of pundits

SACRAMENTO - Rivals Steve Westly and Phil Angelides may be in a fight to the finish as they seek the Democratic nomination for governor, but the primary election's date - 06/06/06 - hasn't stopped political observers from indulging devilish senses of humor.
"Ah, 666," said Democratic political strategist Darrell Sragow said. "I guess this just confirms some people's suspicion that politics is going to hell. My own reaction? This settles it. I'm voting by mail."

Republican consultant Dan Schnur isn't worried about the primary's doomsday date, though, since Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is running unopposed in his bid for re-election.
"I take this very seriously," said the deadpan Schnur. "I predict the Democratic nominee for governor will be cursed with an overwhelming defeat in November. It will be revealed in due time that the Democratic nominee is in fact the spawn of Satan. And it's awfully hard to elect the spawn of Satan, even for the Democrats."
