NEIL YOUNG OFFERS ONLY ONE MESSAGE FOR DU ON MEMORIAL DAY

In 1903 Katharine Lee Bates wrote the original version to a song Neil Young offers with a reverence reserved for true patriots. She wrote the 2nd version in 1904. Her final version was written in 1913.

America the Beautiful - 1913
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife.
Who more than self the country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!

O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America ! America !
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!

O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life !
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!

I love DU because I love my country. America the Beautiful expresses the American dream. Thank you veterans. We remember. We will never forget.

America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!

4. The first day the album was available online I listened to it and
when this song played I started sobbing. I wish so badly for that country to be again.

Very powerful.

5. It seems God left America a long time ago.
I guess God doesn't tolerate pride and arrogance very well.

7. one other issue that Pat Robertson seems to overlook
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's, INCLUDING HIS OIL!

6. Thank you for posting this
...such a beautiful song.

I remember Dan Rather breaking down and crying shortly after 9-11 commenting that we would never again be able to sing these words: "...Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!"

8. I have more trouble with these lines
A thoroughfare for freedom beat

Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!

Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!
