143. Judicial Committtee
I called everyone on the Judicial Committee thursday. Arlen Specters office was rude, Orrin Hatch's answering person told me"Call your own Senator!" and then hung up on me, Dianne Feinsteins office did the same thing. I was appalled at their attitudes.

99. Call your Republicans.
Ask why they support someone against basic American principles such as separation of powers, etc.

Ask them if they value their party above their country, and its constitution.

Definitely CALL the Republicans.

Surprise them with the concept that they represent ALL the voters in their state.

I also called Boxer, Feinstein, and Reid. I e-mailed Leahy, who does not appear to have a working FAX number.

Reid's office was obviously very busy. I basically gave them my position in few words. For Feinstein and Boxer I was able to speak for a minute or so.

30. Yeah, but at least you tried. :(
I think we all feel pretty powerless lately.

I have a neocon representative (my county and area in California are red) and one DINO senator (Feinstein). Boxer does her best, but when most of the Dems aren't even on the same page as their constituency, it's a pretty lonely feeling.

131. At least they are hearing from us
I also contacted our GA senators. They are totally supportive of the "deserve an up or down vote" concept. If they ever have to apply this standard to a nominee by a Democrat, we already know there would be a different standard applied. I would just rather they be out of office by then, instead of guessing what they might do!

116. Dominici told me
in an Email on 1/11/2006 that, well I better just quote him; "If nothing emerges that would disqualify the
nominee, I will support that nomination.
"(sounds like he already had his mind made up)the rest of what he said was the usual, "extremely qualified, very distinguished lawyer and person of high repute", yada, yada, yada. Here is what Bingaman said on 1/13/06; "This nominee will be replacing a justice who cast the deciding vote on numerous cases that upheld the broad application of laws guaranteeing the rights of women, minorities, and disabled people. Please be assured I will keep your comments in mind as I thoroughly scrutinize Judge Alito's record to ensure that policies and values that have made this country great are not undermined."

42. it's pointless, and I'm at peace with that.
I currently live in a red state. The people of my state have spoken and elected two very conservative GOP bible-thumping schmucks to represent us in the Senate and it would be shocking if either one went against the will of his constituents and voted no on a conservative nominee for the Supreme Court. In other words, it just wouldn't happen, not in a million billion years. And I accept that. That's what the majority of people in my state want.

Why doesn't this same principle apply to blue states (are you listening, Dianne?) when it comes to a right-wing extremist possibly sitting on the court? Why should Californians even be sweating it out how their senators will vote (correction: one of them)? What in the fuck is wrong with this picture?

The Republicans appear principled (even though they put party above country) on things like this and we look weak and frightened. That's what it boils down to, and it's why we lose election after election.

(No offense to Californians - I'm one, although sadly misplaced at the moment, and pissed that Feinstein isn't an automatic no vote).

So, no, I haven't phoned my insane duo and I won't. They'd confirm him even if I stood outside their offices and threatened to douse myself with gasoline like a Vietnamese monk if they did.

One thing that I heard at the very end of the hearings when (finally) the Stop Alito folks were allowed some camera time: It's a waiting game. The more people hear about his positions on privacy and on executive trivialize, the more they're turning against this nomination. So, the week the Dems have fought for will be a very important one.

If you can help us keep these "call in" threads kicked, that would be awesome.

I know how that feels, I think, because Feinstein is such a Dino.

But picking up the phone and relating your wishes can also be an empowering thing *for you*. And a reminder that those constituencies are not monoliths.

Please bother if you can bring yourself to do it. :hi:

58. My message to Schumer
Dear Senator Schumer,

You've already been sent at least a dozen form letters from various organizations, with my signature, regarding my opposition to Judge Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court. This time, however, I want to put into my own words for you, as this is so urgently important, the reasons for my wholehearted opposition to Judge Alito and my request to you to FILIBUSTER.

More than anything else in our country, I cherish our Democracy - our freedom, liberty, rights, our CONSTITUTION. If there is anything in this world that I would die for, it is that, and I will fight like a mother bear for that, right to the end. I am a patriot. I hope and expect to see the same dedication from my leaders and representatives.

Judge Alito, in my opinion, is a menace to our Democracy.

I fear the day will come, all too soon, that will mark the end of our Democracy. What I see when I look at the way everything plays out in Washington DC is the infancy of a dictatorship, and a fascist regime. The time of national ID cards and warrantless domestic spying on US Citizens is already upon us. This cannot be tolerated. This has to stop NOW, or our Democracy is already lost.

You can filibuster this nomination. And you well should. I am sick and tired of the right-wing bullies threatening to take away our rights, to take away the filibuster. If that is what they want to do, let them, but not because YOU did not stand up and fight for us, for our Democracy, for our Constitution! If ever there is a time for our leaders and representatives to stand up and fight for We the People, it is NOW.

Before any votes on this judge's confirmation, George W. Bush ought to be investigated. It is unthinkable that this man, this pretend president, who has committed crimes against our Constitution, against We the People, should get to choose ANYONE, not just one justice, but two, to be in such a position of power over us all. I would ask for impeachment hearings before this "president" should be allowed to nominate anyone for anything. Filibuster Alito, and call for the impeachment of George W. Bush. If the radical right wants to take away our liberty and rights, so be it - let Americans see that the Republicans want to take away our rights. Let the American people see who it is that FIGHTS for us, for our rights. It is not the Republicans. The question is, Senator Schumer, will it be YOU?

I voted for you, and I'm trusting you with what is most precious to me: my Constitution, my rights, my liberty, my freedom, my Democracy, my AMERICA. Don't let those neocons take it away from me, from you, from all of us.

They both said they'd relay the message. I asked if they've been getting a lot of calls for a fillibuster and they said yes. Schumer's aide was more receptive and seemed to agree with me. I hope he was sincere.

133. Yes, let them know the huge opposition that is out here against Bush
Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 05:03 PM by Catrina
The Dems know because we always tell them. But Republicans are in a bubble, being told they are representing the American people, looking only at rightwing polls and publications. They only hear from freeper types telling them to slam liberals etc. Let them hear from the majority of the American people who oppose their president and his policies. I think it will be a rude awakening for them.

More even than the Democrats, the Republicans need a taste of the truth. They need to know, and the media won't tell them, that there is a growing anger out here against the hi-jacking of this democracy by their scandal ridden party.

On Randi Rhodes yesterday, I think it was Randi, a woman called and gave out Lindsey Graham's number asking listeners to call and let him know that he did not fool us. He would not know that from the media, or from his rightwing buddies who probably slapped him on the back to tell him what a 'heckofajob' he did.

I called and his line was busy, busy ~ I hope he got an earful. They may be in a bubble, but they are human and I think if Republicans really knew the anger their party is generating it would scare them. They also need to know that their dirty tricks only fool the idiot media and freepers, imo.

There is something about your phone being flooded with people who don't agree with you, when you were under the impression everyone agreed with you. Let's shock and awe them and start calling them. We PAY them!! They don't just work for freepers.

I didn't get through to Graham's office but I'm going to keep trying and I'm going to tell that little creep that his little game was a disgrace to the office he holds. And not to underestimate the American people.

My Senators are Hillary and Schumer ~ I will call them although I don't usually get much response from either of them.

77. Well, living in the District of Columbia...
I have no Senator to call, which makes me angry. I pay federal taxes just like everyone else, and I basically have no representation in the U.S. Congress (except a Delegate that can only vote "in committee" in the House).

I have no Senator to contact regarding Samuel Alito. And yet, if he makes it to the Court, I will be affected by his actions and rulings.

So, since I do not have a Senator to call, I ask everyone else here on D.U. to please be my voice, and make sure you call your Senators.

85. What can I do to help you all?
As I said earlier in the thread (see post # 77, I believe it is) I live in the District of Columbia.

So obviously I do not not have Senators to call.

So, I want to know how can I help otherwise?

I am on John Edward's One America Committee email list, so I received the petition they emailed out the other day. I signed John Edwards' petition, and I forwarded to others.

And I have been covering the Alito hearings on my blog.

But I feel like I need to be doing more. I feel so helpless because I don't have any representation in the Senate. But I pay federal taxes just like everyone else, and it will affect me too if Alito gets confirmed. His decisions on the Court will affect me. Yet I have no one representing me to write to say "vote against him."

So please let me know if there's more I can do....(i.e. helping someone write a letter to the editor, etc).

104. Filibuster Alito!
Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 07:51 AM by GoreDean2008
Alito did nothing but dodge the fair and legitimate questions Senators asked during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. Also, his wife staged a sob opera when Lindsey Graham read the list of the Democratic criticism on Alito. She's just crying because her Republican operatives told her to do so. If that is not the case, she is just a mentally unstable woman and it tells everything about Alito's character as a husband. She can cry all she wants, but I buy none of her BS!

If we get duped by his wife's drama act, there will be hundreds of thousands of real American women really crying day and night because of Alito's cold-blooded woman-hating decisions. And his wife just wants to become a wife of a Supreme Court Justice. Like Alito is a man of flawed character who will say anyhing to advance his career, his wife is also a woman who will say and act anything to advance her husband's career. They are both disgusting and I do not buy any of those BS!

We cannot tolerate this kind of behavior from Alito's part. We cannot rely on Alito's answers in the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing to decide his confirmation. And we cannot allow a woman's meaningless sob to be a factor in a nation's highly important decision. We have to be objective and should not let hundreds of thousands of real American women cry because of one woman's meaningless sob in the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing room. We have to look at Alito's past record and his past record reveals that he is unfit to become a Supreme Court Justice.

Filibuster Alito (and his wife)!

113. oops, I posted it originally on general the general forum
but here is my letter to DeWine and Voinovich again. Hope it helps

"I can't help but wonder why anyone in the senate would vote for Alito considering the history he has shown with his contempt for Congress in general.

I am very concerned about this particular nominee being confirmed. I don't usually have such strong opinions on these types of appointments but I have a really bad feeling on this one.

I value democracy for myself and my children and I am very concerned about the direction this country has taken since 2000. I feel helpless in fighting for my children's future as I can't even be sure my votes are actually counted as they were intended because there is no transparency in the process.

It is my sincere desire not to have my children inherit a theocracy which seems to be the direction the United States is heading. So I am asking even begging you today not to vote to confirm Alito for the Supreme Court."

118. For what it's worth, I emailed my senators: Gregg and Sununu.
Dear Senator - While I am sure your vote is locked in for Samuel Alito, as a constituent I am obligated to voice my opposing opinion. I watched last week's hearing from beginning to end because I believe this position will change the course of our nation for decades. My impression was that Judge Alito is a well educated, polite and intelligent man. He's also quite adept at tap dancing. His responses to questions were often nonanswers meant to fill a minute or two of air space. Unlike Ruth Ginsberg, who is often cited by Republicans for her pro-choice stance, Judge Alito did not state his current view on a woman's right to control her own destiny. One has to assume he will work to overturn Roe. Even more of a concern is what power he may grant the President. Republicans who vote for Samuel Alito should remember that one day there will be a Democrat in the Oval Office again and powers given to President Bush won't go away when that happens. While I'm obviously a Democrat, you should know I've voted for candidates from both parties and don't view myself as a strict "party line" person. I would hope you might be the same sort of person. Sincerely,

Dear Mrs. Clinton,
I am a loyal supporter of you and the Democratic Party and I am extremely concerned with the nomination of Samuel Alito to our Supreme Court. It is troubling to me to see our party appear to be weak and divided. We should all share the same goal and we need to stand unified against this right wing appointment.
I beg of you, as my voice in the Senate, to filibuster this nomination. Use your leadership abilities and bring your fellow Senators together to fight this oppression of our basic civil rights. Let them try to use the Nuclear option, it will only come back to haunt them when our aging Judges are ready for retirement during a Democratic administration.

Respectfully,

and got a busy signal from both, but I was able to successfully fax a letter to both, not that it will help, because both of them will surely support this idjut.

125. Mailed snail mail letters yesterday. Here's what I wrote:
Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 11:27 AM by Beam Me Up
Senator Dianne Feinstein
112 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington DC 20510

Dear Senator Feinstein,

I’m writing you because I strongly oppose the confirmation of Samuel Alito to the United States Supreme court. Alito is not being honest with the Senate and the American people. For example, in a 2001 appearance before the conservative Federalist Society, Alito said he continued to support the concept of “unitary executive power” which holds that the Constitution gives the president all federal executive power. See: http://www.users.muohio.edu/kelleycs/paper.pdf for a history of this concept in the George W. Bush Presidency.

Another concern is Alito’s relationship with Adam Ciongoli, one of Alito’s fiercest supporter on America's air waves. Although he is referred to merely as one of Alito’s former clerks, he is much more than that. Adam Ciongoli was John Ashcroft’s right hand man, he is a believer in the “unitary executive”, he helped draft the offensively named “Patriot Act” and was in charge of handling the flow of information to the 9/11 commission. Currently he is general council for Time Warner.

At some point we and our elected representatives in Congress must stand up to George W. Bush and the neoconservative Project for the New American Century regime and their imperialist wet dreams. To date, his has been the most disastrous, criminally corrupt and morally vacuous Presidency ever. I strongly encourage you and other Senators to filibuster Samuel Alito’s confirmation. There comes a point where we have to take a stand and say, “You Shall Not Pass!,” to the evil that is morphing our Democracy into a fascist, technocratic state. That time is now.

Filibuster. If the Republicans bring on the “nuclear option,” let them. I, my many friends and the majority of the American people will stand with you against this emerging tyranny.

Sincerely,

130. Feinstein-Alito
Apart from a few concerns about guns and abortion, Miss Feinstein is, for all intensive purposes, a moderate Repugnican, doing her part for the elites of the US and California. Be assured Queen Diane would have brunch with the likes of Alito and Scalia and their wifeys before hangin' out with DU members. And what really should concern those few democrats and leftists who still worry about things like secularism and fighting theocracy is that the Gang of 9, with Alito, now has a Catholic majority. So much for James Madison and TJ himself.

136. Emailed Every Dem. Senator....
Only took about 3 hours. I also Emailed 10 Repukes who I thought MIGHT be swayed (those include my two idiot Senators Dewine and Voinovich).

I really think every Dem. needs to hear from us on this issue and even the moderate Republicans (if there really are any)!

P.S. My email to Feinstein was sent back to me because I am not from California!

151. Why should we give them an up and down vote...
when the repukes didn't do the same for Clinton! He was elected, twice (just like Bush) and the repukes felt obligated to filibuster a ton of his nominees. I believe (and my numbers could be a little off on this) that Clinton had a 60% confirmation rate while Bush's is like 99%.

What are you a Republican?

149. If my senators feel no duty to filibuster Alito...
...then they really don't deserve to be my senators.

One is Coleman, a wretched dwarf; enough said on that matter. The other is Dayton, a silver-spoon mediocrity who has endorsed Hillary for president, leapt like a chihuahua when excited about weapons systems made in Minnesota, and is retiring; good riddance.

152. One of my senators is Lindsey Graham.
The other is a TOTAL Bushbot: Jim DeMint.

I sent e-mails, but I know it won't do any good.

In the one to Lindsey I did ask why he felt it was necessary to make Alito's wife cry. Of course, the most I'll get back is a "Thank you for contacting us. Your views are important to us..." response.

155. I did too.
I emailed Murray and Cantwell in Washington state. I doubt it'll do any good. Patty Murray only wants to serve her own interests (getting reelected) rather than do whats right.

I fear our democracy is doomed.

I sent all the Dem senators a flaming e-mail and have gotten no response, sent them 5 days ago now, sent more to Fienstien since she said there was no reason to filibuster and got nothing back. Becoming very disilousioned with the party (supposedly) of the people.

163. I sent letters...
for all the good it will do living in Texas. But, I can say I tried and I expect I'll receive the standard form-letter responses I usually get about three weeks after I contact each of them. I'd almost rather be ignored than have them waste the postage they use when they send me their pithy replies!
