I think it began with gay marriage. Thousands of gays were getting united in a mammoth Sun Yung Moon type ceremony. Damn, there's never a napalm bomb around when you need one.

Then there were a bunch of hippie types who had raided a flag factory and were passing every American flag they could find out through the windows and doors and throwing them onto a bonfire. Where the hell was the mortar squad? They had to be stopped.

Next, I saw a large group of wine-sipping elitist types out demonstrating against the war. I knew I needed to call in an air strike, but someone had ripped the speaker off my transmitter.

The last thing I remember was a midnight raid on the Air America Radio building. (I knew most real Americans wouldn't care. After all, it was New York City and there's nothing there but liberals.) Our team found that all the doors and windows were locked, so we went out looking for some illegal immigrants to throw out of the country.

Waking up drenched in sweat, it took a while before I recalled it was Memorial Day. Having been in the army during the Vietnam era, I was looking forward to a quiet day down at the beach, remembering friends, and trying to erase the remnants of the bitterness I still hold. Our government got 59,000 Americans killed for ... In the final analysis, the answer is, they died for the egos, hubris, arrogance, and stupidity of people with some kind of demented cause. And today, it's happening again in Iraq.

These people keep selling us the same shit over and over again, and there are fools who buy it every time. And they do it through misdirection, lies, bigotry and hatred of "the other." Gays, flag burners, liberal commie bastards ... you know their routines by now.
Very few went to war for any of that kind of crap.

Go have a cookout today, spend time with your family, and remember those who will never again come home from Vietnam or Iraq. Their reasons for going were honorable and they had the courage to stand up for what they believed. But they were used, abused, and lied to. And their lives were stolen from them.

If you haven't done so yet, go to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington and look at The Wall created by Maya Lin. The water running down over that black marble is a flood of tears.
