Even planning a lawsuit! Good luck with that.

"Hugh" gets a mention in the drivel spewed forth on this page:

"It's not sad - it's lame. It's an insult to everyone who ever served and died on the field of battle. Incidently it was their sacrifice which gave these jerks the freedom to have a Google and enjoy the hugh capitalism from it."

I think Hugh Capitalism was Ken Lay's personal assistant at ENRON. BwaaaHahahahaha!!!

2. It is strange though, they do it for all the holidays.

Maybe it is a protest of sorts.

3. I think it is best that they did nothing.
Commercialization of war is tacky and disrespectful.

4. I think they do it for
at least for holidays that are in more than one country. Memorial Day is specific to the U. S.

6. Typical freeper bullshit
I particularly liked the last line. "I'm heading to the beach to reflect on those friends of mine and others who didn't make it back"

Gee, the beach. How comfy. A lot of those guys watched their intestines spill out of their own bodies on a beach. Hope you don't get sunburned or anything. I'd hate to see you have to sue the Weather Channel for not providing the proper UV warnings.

8. It is strange to me that Google did not changed the banner...
some European countries (at least I know about Belgium) celebrate Memorial Day.

Of course, Google can do WHATEVER THEY WANT. Freepers need to eat ____ and die.

9. They're selective...
...about when they display alternative Google logos. Here's a link to their official "online museum" of Holiday logos:

http://www.google.com/holidaylogos.html

I went back through all the years and didn't see a single Memorial Day logo, but they usually do one for the 4th of July.

They particularly seem to enjoy the various New Year holidays, since they don't necessarily fall on Jan 1st.

10. The underlying premise is false: the right wing does not support
the troops more than the left. In fact, the right wing is currently using the lives of the troops for their own selfish gain. It is reprehensible.

The choice of whether or not Google chooses to fly a Memorial day banner is not a left verses right issue.

12. It would be nice to have a Memorial Day banner
Since they have one for many obsure occasions (the birthday of Percival Lowell), a banner honoring fallen troops (from all countries) would be appropriate.

14. I disagree, it trivializes real death that takes place in war.
Just like the false patriotism of the freepers and the republicans.

16. Google would not exist without our war dead
So yeah, I think it's the LEAST that Google could do, as an American-based company, to run up some sort of flag. They change the damn logo for every other, often obscure and sometimes silly holiday. But nothing for Veterans Day or Memorial Day? I think that's kind of telling. Why? The answer cannot be that Google doesn't want to offend international users, because Google is always changing the logo for distinctly America holidays. Why are Memorial and Veterans Days not good enough to warrant same? Someone from the VFW needs to visit Google corporate HQ and politely remind Google that the freedoms of the internet and the success of Google as the mother of all search engines, exist because brave men died making sure that freedom and liberty did not die with them.

17. How about special "Memorial Day" issue Lay's potato chips
With little flag tattoos in it for the kids. Where does it stop? What about all the tacky memorial day sales at car dealerships? That is outright exploitation, but nobody gets all worked up about it. That to me is way more offensive.

24. so i guess the technical expertise of the the guys who started google,
their IPO, and numerous other factors have nothing to do with Google's existence.

"Google would not exist without our war dead"

that almost sounds insane.

if germany had won, don't you think there would have been a Der Volksgoogle or something? by at least 1954?

When they get their lace panties in a wad about the fact not one of Bushit's brats, nephews, nieces, none of them have put their sorry asses on the line, then they can go off on someone else. :grr:

19. How exactly are they supposed to change the banners to reflect it?
It seems to me that it would be very difficult to create some kind of banner that honors the lives of soldiers lost, without looking tacky or crass. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't think Google usually changes their banners on other similar somber holidays.

The fact that the deaths of many generations of soldiers can't be summed up in some bright, colorful cute little graphic on the Google homepage doesn't seem like it's doing any disrespect. I think it's actually MORE respectful, to not reduce that sacrifice of lives to some cute little picture.
