"freedom isn't free"

i thought we were endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights?

i have yet to receive an invoice from god for my life, liberty, or pursuit of happiness.

2. Usually when I hear that...
it's from some right-wing idiot who doesn't like what I'm saying.
The "shut your mouth" is implied when they say that.

I was talking about the anti-invasion protests a few years ago, and this one banquet server piped up, "Well, over in Iraq, they can't even protest like we can or say what you can."

So I looked at her and said "Excuse me? Since we are more free than the Iraqis, I should be celebrating that freedom thats in our Constution by shutting up??? That is what you mean, right?"

She just stammered and babbled a few words...nothing cohesive, then grabbed her tray and fled the kitchen.

So yeah, when I see some sticker or magnetic ribbon with those words, or hear someone say that, I think it usually means "Freedom isn't free, so shut UP and don't you DARE say
anything bad about this war or our president!"

7. enslaved to the house
Freedom isn't free,
that's a fact in plantation life,
pay the master's fee,
love the car and the fancy wife.
Modern mental apogee,
containerred in a mental strife,
warring mentality,
razor sharpened murderous knife.

War against ourselves,
surrender not, get a life,
greedy little elves,
betrayed forgotten omniprescient moment.
Before and after every word,
never seen and never heard.

8. A useful phrase from the military/industrial complex to rip you off.
To the tune of $500bn this year. Not counting the expense of the little adventures in imperialism in Iraq and Afghanistan. Or, the hidden expenses of the nice folks keeping an eye on us.

Ask the folks on the gas guzzling SUV's, they are paying a high price for freedom. :sarcasm:

10. It's a true saying that the right co-opted
They use it kind of like they use the old "loyalty to the troops" line, they abuse it and try to make it theirs. Freedom isn't free, but you don't have to kill for it. You do have to stay awake and involved for it though.

We've fallen into American Idol, into fast food and culture, into our own pocketbooks and our own problems with too little concern for others. We forgot that we have to stay awake and work for it, and apply it to others as well as to ourselves. In the end, yeah, that's been costing us. And in the end there's a lot of truth to the idea that freedom isn't free. It doesn't mean what they want it to though, it doesn't require abuse. Just effort.

11. I interpret it as meaning that everyone must blindly support any war waged
for any reason, just or not, or be branded as unpatriotic.

13. Updated version of "Love it or leave it"
Mouthed by the same idiots I contended with 30 and 40 years ago.

It must be nice to have a philosophy that can be entirely explicated in four or five words.

14. If it's not free
then who the H*** is paying for it? The soldiers and their families, that's who! Our children and grandchildren! And the money we are borrowing from China. Because we sure the hell can't pay for it out of our taxes, now could we?
Cheney needed those tax cuts! He sure as heck isn't paying for it.
