The return home

At Dover Air Force Base, a chaplain and honor guard pay their respects to the fallen

By KRISTIN HARTY
The News Journal

05/29/2006

He doesn't know their names, but he always says a prayer for their families.

At least twice a week for the last three years, Chaplain David Sparks has boarded military aircraft to receive America's war dead.

They come in C-5s, C-17s and private cargo planes contracted by the government. They come at all hours of the day and night, riding deep in the bellies of the aircraft.

More than 2,750 U.S. servicemen and women have died in Afghanistan and Iraq since fighting began after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

They touch American soil for the first time at Dover Air Force Base, where the Department of Defense operates its largest mortuary.

A chaplain and an honor guard always meet them.

In a ceremony few ever witness, they march onto the tarmac with an official party of top military brass. They wear battle dress uniforms -- BDUs -- because the country is at war.

1. That piece of shit BUSH should be FORCED to view each and
every one of them, then face these fallen heroes' families. I HATE that dirty rat bastard for what he's done to this country.

I hope all these families who have lost a member will someday find solace and comfort.. somehow...

2. Very sad indeed. I'm looking at a sign from last 4th of July that
I made that said: "1745 - Stop Bush - Happy 4th"

We've lost more than a thousand since last July 4. Wow.

8. That would be a powerful image. This 4th, put your sign up
with the 1700 number crossed out, and the new 2006 number next to it. Some folks might actually get it.

3. bush is a man with
no soul, a evil man, and he won't be happy until he commits genocide on even our soldiers, to put in his own death squads in with the direction of John Negroponte.

There were two DOD casket photos in the article. Have the rules changed?

U.S. Department of Defense
Military remains arrive at Dover in a variety of military and
civilian aircraft. They are met by a chaplain and honor guard,
and sometimes by their families.

On edit-- just realized that this is not .jpg,

9. gotta hand it to those guys who form the honor guards . . .
that has to be one of the toughest assignments in or out of the military . . .

I wouldn't last the first day . . .

so kudos and very special thanks to those honoring the (mostly) young men and women whose lives were taken for . . .

what? . . .
