Is Hollywood ONLY making Violent and Ultra-Violent movies now?
Edited on Mon May-29-06 11:10 PM by Up2Late
Or is it just that those are the only movies they advertise on late night Comedy Central??? O.K., they do advertise a few "romantic comedies" every so often, but it seems like the number of Ultra-Violent films is way up.

BTW, late night Comedy Central is about the only time I watch television anymore.

I mean, did we really need a NEW version of "The Omen" or "When a Stranger Calls"??? :banghead:

What's next, a ULTRA Violent re-make version Halloween or Friday the 13th?

1. My husband nearly crapped his pants when he saw the trailer to
The Omen the other day. I tried accessing the website to show him, but it wasn't running at that time.

We certainly don't need a new Omen single, or series, IMO. The first one with the lovely Lee Remick and Gregory Peck was scary and violent enough.

I seriously doubt they can improve upon a really stupid concept to start with.

11. Couldn't stand it...
Saw it as a youngster and thought the whole premise was stupid.

Then again, I tend not to like anything rooted in the Christian mythos, particularly crap from "Revelations."

2. Romantic comedies, for the most part,
are about deception...you know, boy meets girl, boy lies to girl or girl lies to boy, and (alleged) hilarity ensues. Then one discovers the truth and it all breaks apart, but a dramatic gesture at the end of the movie makes it all good.

All things being equal, I'd rather watch the Matrix or Spider Man.

28. Love actually and spanglish
I think cut new ground in the facile definition you just put forward. Both use a
collage of relationships in a moving tapestry where much more flawed characters
act out much more real-life events and transcend them.

In a culture that models itself after itself after its films, after the
results of a generation of rambo's, i'm more than happy to have a generation
of flawed lovers. Too many rambo's are out there fighting back their psychosis
nightmares using real bullets.

One of the reasons I stopped watching the local weather guy was because he would just about pee his pants whenever we had an outbreak.

Then the lights would go out.

Now I use NOAA's website to track them and keep my Weather Radio close by.

I get my tv show fix from bittorrent networks-no commercials!

14. Naw
I'm a TV baby. Always will be. I love television. And I see so much promise in it that I can't give up on the dream.

I'm not a huge fan of a lot of what's on TV right now, though. I got satellite to see the Sci-Fi channel, and except for that, USA and the Comedy Channel, there is little I watch otherwise other than broadcast channels. But while some might think me totally nuts, I found that there are really good shows, you just have to look for them. The CSI shows, the Law and Order shows, and other such procedural dramas are usually good. I can distinguish schmaltz from something great when I watch both Ghost Whisperer and Medium--Medium is a MUCH better show than Ghost Whisperer because the writing is so much better. But I'm into the paranormal, so I watch them both. You need to be able to find what your "bliss" is, and become immersed in that.

I have a friend who is so gungho on films, and considers TV a waste. But tell me: what medium showed images of 9/11 to shock us all? What medium was there to bring us all together? Without TV, we would be lost. Without the global aspects of television, we would still all be strangers. Without TV, what would we have in common with our counterparts on the other side of the world?

TV has its place. People just have to learn that it isn't a babysitter, that some discretion is needed, and that most people are out to make a buck, and quality TV is transient. Once these lessons are learned, TV can become a very friendly place.

15. Oh TV definitely has a place.
Just not in my house.

I was so damned frustrated by what passed for journalism, drama and humor, that I decided to take the plunge.

I'm a sci-fi fan too, and I can get any show you watch off the net, sans commercials.

I must admit I've really become addicted to BBC now, their quality is so superior to American tv it would be a crime to even compare the two.

16. tv died
it fell off the bed (I was moving stuff around in Hubby's room-long story), and it fell on the floor. However, it was not connected to the cable anyway. All we have is the internet for streaming radio, and the SF AM radio stations. Rarely go to movies...I like costume dramas, and there have not been any good ones for a while.

Isn't it amazing how many radio stations and podcasts are available for free?

Not to mention the huge amount of literature that's been uploaded to internet libraries.

And I'm the same about going to the movies, it has to be pretty special for me to buy a ticket.

Compare "the Matrix" to the original "Robocop".

Robocop was a non-stop, gun-shooting gore-fest. "Matrix" was high art in comparison.

21. Oh, don't EVEN get me started on Superman! I worked for the Producer...
...of the Original 70's version (Ilya Salkind) down at Universal Studios Florida, back in 1990-92.

When he and his "I live in $400.00+ per night Hotel Suites in the South of France and Europe" Father, Alexander Salkind's movie about Christopher Columbus "bombed" at the box office, they decided NOT to pay me my (just slightly more than) minimum wages or mileage for the last 2 months I worked for them.

That would have to be one hell of a movie for me to see it.

...was being written while I was there. I think the writers name was Cary Brown.

I did get to answer the phone one of the times that Christopher Reeve called, and I drove the late Mario Puzo to the Airport once too. He gave me a $40.00 tip (the only tip I ever got from any of those cheap bastards down there).

19. Just mentioned a day or so ago
to my wife that I was switching around the guide on the tv set to see the movies and everyone was a police-murder-carchase. It was pretty depressing. Are those the only stories worth making movies about? Tens of thousands of novels are written every year. Some of them must have good stories to them.

the Omen remake looks virtually identical to the original version, except with a new cast. I really don't see the point at all. I'd rather watch the original because at least it has Gregory Peck in it.

You know, they still make movies in other countries.
And indy directors still exist in this country. And
I understand there's a movie out there called "An
Inconvenient Truth" that you might want to see.

Of course, you can't see movies such as these down at
the $10 Popcorn Megaplex.

And if all else fails, about 100 years of great movies
are now available on DVD. Some of those movies actually
feature such oddments as plotting, a good script, and
character development. In some of those movies, you
never even see a gun! Or maybe just one gunshot at
Major Strasser near the very end.

I don't care for action movies, horror movies now have way too much gore in them (And I used to like horror movies, several decades ago.)

About the only movies I'd go to now would be animated films.

My wife and I look around for something to watch between 7 to 8 while our 2 year old is still up. Pretty much nothing to watch, we have been watching Quantum Leap DVDs from the library.

Basically TV is - CSI 1, 2 ,3 4, etc how many of these things are there. Law and Order - two of these? Whichever one has the horribly acted male and female duo - Criminal Intent?. Or crappy reality shows. What happened to just some interesting dramas. I guess Lost is it.

I rented that by mistake. I didn't know what the story line was gonna be, but I was lured by it being a Quentin Tarantino flick. I could only watch the first half hour. I made it to the second "incident" when I realized I couldn't hang. How sick. I can only imagine how freakin awful the rest of the movie was.

For all the elitist "kill your tv" talk, there are a lot of really good, really smart shows on tv right now.

Sopranos
The Daily Show
Battlestar Galatica
The Shield
24 (well until this year)
Lost
Entourage
Deadwood
The Office
My Name is Earl
