US General from Iraq is pissed.
http://archive.gulfnews.com/articles/06/05/29/10043169.html

Remember all those times Bush has made statement --

"if the commanders in the field ask for more troops then I'll send them, but they haven't asked for more"

Apparently there HAVE been Generals asking for more troops. At least this one had.

snip:

General Batiste, 53, who claims that his critique has "growing support on both sides of the aisle in Congress", alleges that Rumsfeld not only went to war with too few troops, but then refused urgent pleas from commanders on the ground for more.

1. You'd need over a million troops to reverse all the damage now
Even then, all you'd be doing is making a bigger target of yourself for an unhappy population to attack.

5. Perhaps you need a strongman to control the situation.

Many of us predicted (not here, I wasn't on DU then) that the end result after all the bloodshed and misery of invasion and occupation, would be the installation of a strongman no better than Saddam, and probably worse.

I still hope we were wrong. But the course of events is not encouraging that hope.

Edit to add: PERHAPS with more troops at the right time, to prevent looting of arms dumps and priceless antiquities and general lawlessness, it could have been avoided. But we'll never really know now.

2. Wow, a general whose fidelity is to his troops rather than the
Administration and then go on record asking for more troops like Oliver Twist asking for more gruel. Integrity and courage may have returned to the U.S. military.

4. He will get a knock on his door late one night in the future and...
that's the last we hear from him.

6. They'll brush him off as a whack job that was seeking promotion
and didn't get one.
