Driver drags bike 4 miles
N.C. man charged with intent to kill

An N.C. man was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill after a car plowed into a motorcyclist early Sunday and dragged his bike for several miles down U.S. 17 Business.

Larry Jacobs, of Sugar Grove, N.C., was arrested in Surfside Beach after witnesses saw a car hit 27-year-old Makino Robinson from behind, then continue driving at least four miles with the motorcycle pinned beneath his car.

Robinson, whose family lives in the Browns Ferry section of Georgetown County, managed to escape serious injury, according to Myrtle Beach police. He was tossed onto the hood of a car after he was struck, then he rolled off the vehicle.

Robinson, who was on weekend leave from Fort Bragg, N.C., has deep bruises and severe road burns, said his father, David Robinson.

They're going to bar-b-que the car driver, assuming he wasn't nuts.

He deserves it.

5. I think the "gee, I didn't know" argument is off the table on this one
I think that even someone who was talking on their cell phone would realize that they were pushing (not dragging) a motorcycle pinned beneath their car. :dunce:

13. I'd say!
considering the biker was on his hood for a brief while trying to hang on!
<snip>Robinson "flailed about" on the hood of Jacobs' vehicle, the witness told police.</snip>
Jeez! also from the report of the eyewitness Jacobs' went out of his way to hit this biker! Insane or just damn mean as hell!

10. Reminds me a bit...
of the woman who struck a homeless man with her vehicle and drove home with the guy embedded in the windshield, parked the car in her garage, and left the guy to die for several days while he begged for help.

I believe she was a health care provider and had been smoking crack with her boy friend just prior to the incident.

12. Mr. Jacobs is either mentally disturbed or really really old...
I witnessed an accident on the parkway in Pittsburgh once...an elderly woman was merging with traffic at the Edgewood Swissvale exit and she just zoomed out and swerved into the other lane and smashed this saturn into the jersey barrier....the elderly woman stopped for just a moment and then drove off ....I followed her, called the state police and at one point was along side her...looking at her...and she seemed oblivious....it was freaky... (granted being next to her for those moments scared me..)

my first thought was that this person might have been old, but even still... how could you miss a body flying up on your hood and over your car? Even age wouldn't quite explain that one. Weird stuff!

38. He's a tourist in Myrtle Beach
During "Atlantic Beach" bike week, aka black bike week. We have two bike weeks here in Myrtle Beach. One lasts about 10 days, that's when the Harley bikers come in (mainly white). Then, during Memorial Day weekend, we have another set of bikers in town, primarily younger and black, riding the other types of motorcycles (not sure what they are called, the types you see bike racers on TV using).

The 2-3 weeks that bikers are in town are enough to drive the locals crazy, much less a tourist in town just for the weekend. It probably had been building up over the weekend from all the other bikers, and he took his anger out on that biker.

24. Or just angry
This happened a couple of miles from my house. I'm not sure the article goes into much backstory, since it's from the local paper so everyone already knows what's been going on, but we've had hundreds of thousands of bikers in town the last few weeks. It's probably enough to send a lot of people over the edge, but of course most people wouldn't even think of doing something like this.

They say the guy was in town for the weekend, so my guess is he probably did this as sort of revenge or something, like road rage. I doubt it was a mental problem, even though they may try to use that as a defense. He was probably just pissed at all the bikers, and took it out on this guy purposefully.

15. That asshole needs to rot in hell.
I have a foolproof plan to end this kind of behavior forever.

Simply make all drivers ride a bike for 2 years before they can drive a car. The more pathetically ignorant the driver, the faster and bigger model of sportbike they get to drive.
At the end of the two years, the only drivers left to drive with not only have a good appreciation of motorcyclists, but the experience will make them more observant and better drivers. The other upside is that the idiot drivers will have taken themselves out of circulation.

21. Not to justify what the stupid old prick did-
but my wife and i were both lamenting to each other in the car the other day, that motrcycle season is in full bloom again- with the morons zipping in and out of traffic on the highways...i remember seeing one such guy totally wipe out on the edens last year- and the rush of satisfaction it gave me...
BUT- intentionally ramming a motorcycle is just plain psychotic.(of course, zipping through high-speed traffic on a street ninja, with a girl on the back and neither of you is wearing a helmet ain't exactly rational behaviour either)

23. Sounds like some unbridled road rage to me
People would be suprised at how often this happens, drivers for whatever reason causing cyclists to crash. I've had buddies run over, run off the road, run into, all done so deliberately by people in cars, trucks and SUVs. Then there are the other "near misses" so to speak, people who cut right in front of you and then stop quickly, people who tailgate, drift into your lane, etc. etc.

For some unknown reason there is a group of drivers out there who utterly loathe anybody on two wheels, be it a bicycle, scooter or motorcycle, and they act out their hatred on roads and highways. I would love to see a psychological study done of these people, in order to figure out why they feel the need to do bodily harm to their fellow human being just because of what they ride.

I'm glad that Mr. Robinson escaped with relatively minor injuries, and I hope that they throw the book at the the fellow who ran him down.

25. That's what it is
The bikers drive most locals crazy, much less what looks to be a random tourist who happened to be in town this weekend (Myrtle Beach has hundreds of thousands of bikers in town the last couple weeks of every May). Imagine more bikers on the road than cars, and those bikes are speeding down your residential street at 80mph+, people gathering in parking lots partying, playing music so loud that it vibrates the windows of your house a block away, etc.

Road rage is bad enough when it's a spur of the moment thing, not to mention when it's something that has been stressing people out all weekend. There's no doubt in my mind that this was done vengefully and intentionally.

Edited on Tue May-30-06 11:19 AM by LostinVA
I lived in Wilmington for several years, and know just about exactly where this happened... this biker was bothering no one... and the driver doesn't even live in Myrtle...

on edit: And, when you live in a tourist area, you have to put up with them... that's one reason why I moved from Wilmington.

36. I didn't say that biker in particular
He probably just took out a weekend's worth of frustration on that guy.

Tourists that don't know much about the bike weeks are probably even less apt to deal with them if they come down during one of the bike weeks. They drive the locals crazy, so I can't imagine what they'd do to a tourist who came down here without knowing much about it.

So, like I said, my guess is the tourist that hit the guy was down most of the weekend, probably driven crazy by all the bikers in town, then took it out on that one guy for whatever reason. So, not sure what you would call it -- maybe a slow-developing case of road rage.
