MANCHESTER, N.H. The Republican operative who came up with the idea of jamming the New Hampshire Democratic Party's get-out-the-vote phone lines on Election Day 2002 is back in the political swim.
Charles McGee, former executive director of the state Republican Party, pleaded guilty to conspiracy in the phone-jamming scandal and served seven months in prison. He now works at Spectrum Monthly and Printing Incorporated, which publishes campaign fliers for Republicans.
McGee recently sent out an e-mail inviting Republican candidates to a free "G-O-P Campaign School" hosted by the company at Southern New Hampshire University. The workshop will be held next weekend and will be taught by former Maine state Representative Adam Mack.
Hundreds of hang-up calls tied up the Democrats' phone lines during a tight U-S Senate race between former Congressman John Sununu and Democratic Governor Jeanne Shaheen. Sununu won. Two other people have been convicted and a fourth man has been indicted.
The chairman of the state Republican Party says it has absolutely nothing to do with the workshop and will hold its own candidate training sessions later next month.
