Men@War
Hadithah in context

By Mackubin Thomas Owens

The basic aim of a nation at war is establishing an image of the enemy in order to distinguish as sharply as possible the act of killing from the act of murder.

—Glenn Gray, The Warriors

It seems like only yesterday. It was 1991 and a U.S.-led coalition easily expelled Saddam Hussein’s army from Kuwait, signaling to some the emergence of a “revolution in military affairs” that would “transform the very nature of war.” Americans at home watched their TV screens in awe as precision-guided munitions flawlessly struck their targets, destroying them with little, if any, “collateral damage.”

*snip*

In the quest for its own My Lai, the anti-Iraq war faction in this country has had to settle for Abu Ghraib, by far the most hyped stories of the war. But now, allegations of multiple murders in the town of Haditha, an insurgent stronghold in al Anbar Province, may provide them with the incident they need. According to published reports, a number of Marines from the storied 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division are accused killing more than 20 Iraqi civilians in retaliation for the death of one of their comrades by a roadside bomb in November, 2005.

1. He kind of sounds like Osama rationalizing killing 3000 innocents on 9/11
Doesn't he?

2. "Hadithah in Context"
The anti war faction has had to settle for abu ghraib. Would such trype come from a rational mind? I guess the pro war faction has had to settle for lies, being duped and used like bourbon street hookers and thousands of unnecessary deaths. The bush lemmings must be so proud.

3. You just can't argue with the truly insane
Like war critics were rooting for a nice civilian massacre. These nazi shitheels need rapid, forceful and repeated applications of baseball bats to return them to normalcy.

4. Isn't killing an act of murder?
Context or not, it is still the loss of a life and innocent life at that.

These fundamentalist mouthpieces can justify anything, if "their guy" is behind it. In this case it is bu$h's war and bu$h is "their guy"

6. Of course they can justify it. They believe that he was appointed
by God who used the Supreme Court as His instrument. Therefore, he can do no wrong and to criticize his actions and behavior is un-American and, therefore, unpatriotic.

7. Abu Ghraib "hyped"? Haditha an "extreme case"?
Hey listen, "Mackubin" (what the fuck kind of name is that anyway? Is that what you call your moustache?), your kind, the self-righteous deniers -- or as I like to call you, idiots who habitually stick their heads up their asses to the detriment of the human race at large -- you enable massacres because you just can't get your puny brains around the concept that the war is lost. It was built on lies, is being badly managed from Bush** on down, and the options are sacrifice more lives or have the balls to admit defeat and -- oh, here's a concept -- learn from it.

Your perky little diatribe will no doubt get the RW armchair warriors pumping their arms in the air, but it utterly glosses over the fact that, after failing to have the common sense not to fall for the war-boosting propaganda and nationalism in the first place, people like you should have been speaking out on behalf of our soldiers and the wrong-headedness of leaving them in that situation long ago. Don't wave your fucking jingoist flag at us now and expect us to come to attention.

Discredit the efforts of our soldiers in Vietnam? It obviously hasn't occurred to you, Mack, but that's exactly what you do when you minimize and seek to cover up the significance of Abu Ghraib, Haditha, Fallujeh, Gitmo, torture and rendition as an "accepted" practice, and any number of other reprehensible crimes our troops have been made to engage in for whatever reason. It damages them, hollows out their souls, and leaves them that much more capable of doing worse next time -- if they aren't sent home to live uneasily with themselves and others for the rest of their lives...Just like so many Vietnam vets.

And the people in charge are never held responsible. God forbid people with your audacity should dare to use a little of that righteous anger you burp at the Left to see Bush** questioned, under oath, to find out the truth of why he turned Iraq into a shooting gallery and keeps our soldiers in the middle of it.

Rep. Murtha and the rest of us over here on the side of Peace (look it up in your dictionary) are the ones who truly care about our troops, the outcome of Iraq, and our legacy as a nation. So far, thanks to you and your man Bush**, the last three years of "democratizing" the place have been full of nothing but "hype" and "extreme cases".

It's time for you numb-brained hindrances to society to recognize the painful truth finally and practice a little personal responsibility. Swallow your fucking huge prides for the sake of all. Get to work ending this thing, bringing our troops home, and holding the Bush** administration accountable.

If you can't do even that much for the troops you claim to support (and yes, your support will require a bit more than empty words and yellow ribbon bumper stickers this time), then get the fuck out of the way and let the adults into the room so we can start cleaning up after you. Again.
