It's probably a dead horse by now, but I just thought that I would make a quick note on the subject. They aren't that intrusive, and if they help the guys defray the cost of the website, then it's a good thing.
There is another webboard that I've got a "home" at, and the way they finally worked out the whole ads vs cost bit was to offer members "gold" memberships that would make the ads disappear for these gold members. That way, those who actually helped and contributed to the site and their particular boards, got the "reward" in the form of adless pages. Those who used the website but didn't contribute had to see the ads. Since they were the same kind of text only ads, it wasn't such a pain in the ass. To me, it's equivalent to watching broadcast TV with ads, or cable premier channels without ads.
This is just a thought, but it might work for DU as well as it does for other websites out there. I will always contribute to DU as much as I can, because it's one of the few places in the world, online or not, where I feel comfortable enough to state my opinions without fear of reprisal.

1. I installed Adblock-- I found many of the ads essentially spam.... |

List harvests, get rich without working schemes, and mail order romance. Ugh. I don't mind targeted advertising-- the stuff in the leftmost frame, for instance, but the Google ads were like the classified ad section in the back of cheesey magazines. Not that I'd know what the ads in cheesey magazines look like, mind you....
Anyway, I blocked 'em. Problem solved.
