Tell me again why we're in Iraq.
The really big question with no answers

May 31, 2006
Ellis Henican
Newsday

Tell me again why we're there.

It's four Memorial Days and counting since "Mission Accomplished." We still have 132,000 American troops in Iraq. A million of our men and women have served by now, giving of themselves in tragic and extraordinary ways. Yet the insurgency is growing bolder - not fading away.

Tell me again why we're there.

Already, 2,465 Americans have been killed. Another 18,184 have been wounded. No one knows how many Iraqi civilians have died - 30,000? 40,000? - in this costly effort to save them.

Tell me again why we're there.

7. there is only one reason we're in Iraq.
money

this war has been a HUGE windfall for defense contractors, namely HALLIBURTON. Not to mention the oil companies who are still drooling over the oil fields in Iraq.

but it's not about WMD, it's not about terrorism, it's not about spreading liberty. it's about MONEY.

that's all this administration is about. everything they do.

20. Oil? What oil? You mean to tell me there's oil in Iraq?!!!
I'm sure that two guys that have spent their whole lives in the oil industry would never invade the country that has the second or third largest reserves of oil in the world just to further their own business interests. That's just crazy talk. It's moon-batty.

The real reason they went in was to steal a decent falafel recipe.
:sarcasm:

Seriously though, They went in to liberate the Iraqi people and spread democracy. No really! They did! Stop laughing!

11. Who would know..
I keep hearing that the soldiers have this 'mission' and that 'mission'. Perhaps we should ask one, anyone...what this 'mission' is! Keep hearing the rhetoric about their clear 'mission' over there and how they need to finish it. What is 'IT'???

14. So Dumbya can relive the Gulf War image

of his Daddy as a War President commanding armies, ships and planes. I bet in all his drug-addled stupor during his Dad's presidency that was the only conception he had of what being President is about.

22. Sad, but I think that's the closest to the truth
After Poppy Bush's Gulf War "liberated" Kuwait, Dubya was Air Force One with the press pool and made a remark asking why anyone would ever vote for a Democrat now. He saw being a successful "war president" as a sure-fire route to amassing more power, and had lamented his father's failure to capitalize on the temporary upswing in his polling numbers.
