Warren Jeffs: Listening to rock is "enjoying the spirit of the black race"
Edited on Wed May-31-06 01:50 PM by derby378
I kid you not. Polygamist cult leader Warren Jeffs actually said that.

On edit: Go to http://www.cnn.com/ and search for the Jeffs video segment on the main page. The earlier link I supplied does not work.

6. Yeah Elvis, how'da like that!!
In chruch as a kid we were told that rock music was bad because of all the drums and such what came from Africa where they have pagan religions and therefore sinful against God which really gets me now with all the lame Christian Rock. Ple-e-e-e-ease.

We kids thought they were downright crazy and thought it was really creepy when visiting preachers would tell us how they had a "Rock records" bonfire where all the teens at his church would bring their Beatle records to burn. Oh, and of course...Jimmy Hendrix and his cover of the National Anthem.

4. Well he is correct on this one
But the full story of the matter is that rock n' roll is a hybrid of African American blues, gospel and jazz with white American country, celtic and folk music:shrug: Amazing what happens when you mix, match and meet in the middle.

7. I would phrase it differently, and drop the word "race"
but I would agree with a sentiment somewhat like that. Maybe "Rock music originates from the soul of African American culture," or maybe even "from African culture."

I get edgy when people talk about the "black race" or "white race." Smacks too much of the science of the late 19th century, that justified concepts like "racial purity," or "racial superiority."
