The DLC: to the History Pages
http://www.counterpunch.org/carmichael05302006.html

-------------------------------

For a decade and a half, the DLC dominated the Democratic Party more thoroughly than any pressure group had ever controlled any political party in American history. After ten years of failure to regain the majority in Congress and abject failures in the two previous presidential elections, Governor Howard Dean led a grassroots movement of party activists to reclaim the levers of power for traditional Democratic policies: constitutional democracy, the open society, multilateralism, social welfare, a national health service, national security and homeland security realized through diplomacy rather than by military confrontation and many more substantive and socially progressive policies besides.

While Governor Dean faced a broad field of DLC-backed opponents parroting Mr. From's mantras redolent of neoconservative cant, each one crumbled like a rag doll before him. Today, Governor Dean is leading a through-going reorganization of the Democratic Party that relies on the energy provided by grassroots activists. At the same time, Governor Dean has de-emphasized the right-leaning consultancies and pressure groups preferred by the DLC.

In order to succeed with his plan for the reform of the Democratic Party, Governor Dean faces the stalwart opposition of Mr. From and his neoconservative cronies at the DLC and many powerful Democratic office holders as well, who are still under their sway. These neoconservative Democrats include: Governor Tom Vilsack, Senator Evan Bayh, Senator Joe Biden and Senator Hillary Clinton.

1. Uh-huh, and it's why I'm not voting for my DINO senator
It's not just THEIR SOBs who are the problem, it's OUR SOBs too.

Numbers games would be all well and good but we know who the senior members are now, and they're not all our friends.

It's time to get rid of them. No matter what happens with Congress in 2006, we'd better resign ourselves to 2 more years of Stupid's bungling, mismanagement and general havoc. We will also be facing economic disaster because our system is simply unsustainable. Neither the GOP nor the hidebound unimaginative conservatives in the DLC has a clue what to do about it.

There is no time like the present to clean House. And Senate.

2. Go HOWARD!
These neoconservative Democrats include: Governor Tom Vilsack, Senator Evan Bayh, Senator Joe Biden and Senator Hillary Clinton.

NONE of whom I'd vote for. I hope Dean succeeds with his reform. We need to take our party back!

5. GOOD! We really need to send these people a message...LOUD AND CLEAR.

They destroyed our party! The people need a CHOICE between a DEMOCRAT and a Repuke. NOT a choice between a repuke lite and a repuke. I LIKE the LEFT WING of the Democratic Party.

6. what the hell has Dean done? nothing
DLC brought the Democratic party back from the wilderness.
I can't think of a single "liberal" Democrat who would come close to winning a national election.

8. "DLC brought the Democratic party back from the wilderness."
Huh? What wilderness are you referring to? And, I don't see that the Democratic Party from any camp has done a damn thing positive. I we regain control it will be solely due to the terrible corruption of the Republican regime. As far as I can tell, the Dems, especially the DLC Dems have hurt us,not helped us.

I don't think that Dean's grassroots idea is a bad one. Too soon to tell if it is helping the cause.

13. "DLC brought the Democratic party back from the wilderness"...
Even if what you say is true, who cares? If the party is remade in the mold of the DLC, corporate rule is assured. At least Dean provides a glimmer of hope.

9. Okay, that's awfully obscure
What does it have to do with anything? Why don't you address the content of the article instead of bringing up something like this?

10. They're pretty much dedicated to attacking the DNC from the "left".
I say "left" because some people have made the accusation that there's some right-wing backing of it. Oh and they published this debunked Haitian man-boobs story.

I'm surprised they seem to like Dean, but then again, they mention him in this article with all this use of the word "Zionism" which is a term sometimes - though admittedly not always - used in the context of spreading anti-Semitism.

11. You don't need to school me on Counterpunch
I've been reading that site a lot longer than I have been reading DU. Many news and editorial sources publish inaccurate articles. Do you post about the debunked 'incubator baby' stories from the first Gulf War whenver you see someone quote the Corporate media?

And again, you aren't addressing the message of the article. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

I have to sign off for the night.

Peace.

14. I think from now on
I am going to bring up "the debunked 'incubator baby' stories from the first Gulf War" whenever somebody quotes the MSM. Great response to one of our dear DUDLCers Ms. Monkey. You gave me my morning laugh.
