What was... what might have been... what is... what might yet be...
Looking back at what once was...

William Jefferson Clinton
State of the Union 2000 - January 27, 2000

(excerpt)

At the dawn of the last century, Theodore Roosevelt said, "the one characteristic more essential than any other is foresight...it should be the growing nation with a future that takes the long look ahead." So, tonight, let us take our long look ahead -- and set great goals for our nation.

To 21st century America, let us pledge these things: Every child will begin school ready to learn and graduate ready to succeed. (Applause.) Every family will be able to succeed at home and at work, and no child will be raised in poverty. (Applause.) We will meet the challenge of the aging of America. We will assure quality, affordable health care, at last, for all Americans. (Applause.)

We will make America the safest big country on Earth. (Applause.) We will pay off our national debt for the first time since 1835. (Applause.) We will bring prosperity to every American community. We will reverse the course of climate change and leave a safer, cleaner planet. America will lead the world toward shared peace and prosperity, and the far frontiers of science and technology. And we will become at last what our founders pledged us to be so long ago -- one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. (Applause.)

These are great goals, worthy of a great nation. We will not reach them all this year. Not even in this decade. But we will reach them. Let us remember that the first American Revolution was not won with a single shot; the continent was not settled in a single year. The lesson of our history -- and the lesson of the last seven years -- is that great goals are reached step by step, always building on our progress, always gaining ground.

1. What is
Edwards pays for high school students in one of the poorest counties in the United States to attend their first year of college.
Gore makes a movie about climate change, bringing a vitally important issue to the forefront.
Carter publishes 20 books, builds homes for the homeless, vaccinates hundreds of children in Africa, wins Nobel Prize for Peace.

Our Losers do more to make the World a better place than their Winners. I kind of like being us.

19. And Kerry's running around supporting 135 Dem candidates
for the mid-term election. And giving speeches on the value of dissent to college students. And voting against every stupid bill the Senate Republicans put up.

18. Why is that b&w picture of Magneto at the bottom of the post?
Is it a statement that Bush will only be overturned when the Mutant Brotherhood topples the world's governments? Sure looks that way, given the wimpiness of the Democratic opposition.

On second thought, there's another meaning. Only in a story written by Stan Lee could any of the above candidates fight and defeat the Republican lies.

When are we going to get any candidates with a chance of winning? I can't imagine any of the "approved" candidates having the courage to say to Bush, "I'm the Juggernaut, bitch!"

20. I think Feingold has, actually! Great Post Saphire Blue ~ I wish we
could go back to the Clinton years. I remember when they won the first election. There was such a feeling of hope and joy and a sense that they had the enthusiasm and energy to do great things.

But there were dark forces in this country waiting in the wings making sure that the American people would be deprived of the efforts of one of the potentially best presidents we ever had.

I always felt that the Lucienne Goldbergs, Ann Coulters et al should have been prosecuted for attempting to bring down a duly elected president and for harming this country greatly and taking away the rights of the people to the time and effort of the man they elected. He was the last elected president of the US.

Thanks again. Reading his words of hope, focusing on the American people, makes it all the more difficult to listen to the current resident of the WH, who only talks about people in other countries and seems to care nothing at all for the people he is supposed to serve.
