"Iraq is abject misery": Gen. Barry McCaffrey

If you weren't watching CNN in the daytime yesterday (see Segment 1 of The Situation Room), you would have missed Gen. Barry McAffrey's stark statements about Iraq, when he stood outside the White House following a meeting with four other Iraq experts and President Bush, who asked for their assessment:

GEN. BARRY MCCAFFREY, U.S. ARMY (RET): Iraq is abject misery.

MALVEAUX: That's the assessment from a retired four star Army general who just returned from Iraq and was invited to the White House to give Mr. Bush his perspective.

MCCAFFREY: I think it's a terribly dangerous place for diplomats and journalists and contractors and Iraqi mothers. Trying to go about daily life in that city is a real nightmare for these poor people.

That's Gen. McCaffrey, pre-Tony Snow's spin job in the WH briefing yesterday. (I've put in excerpts of what Tony spun, and Helen Thomas's questions, below the fold.)

4. Isnt this the same fool who took a trip to Iraq
a couple of weeks ago and came back sayings things were fine and dandy? I thought the Reich wing were just quoting him endlessly only a few weeks ago.
