(05-31) 14:03 PDT REDWOOD CITY - Hillsborough woman Anita Tolentino pleaded no contest in San Mateo County Superior Court Tuesday to neglecting and failing to groom her pet Shih Tzu, which was found wandering around the wealthy suburb with severely matted hair and smelling of urine and feces.
Tolentino was sentenced to one year of probation and ordered to pay $687 in restitution to the Peninsula Humane Society and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which cared for the little dog, named Benji, until he was adopted last year.
"This is one breed that you need to groom, but she just didn't care," said humane society investigator Debi DeNardi. "The owners of most of these little breeds buy cute little jackets and fancy collars for them. They don't just throw them out in the backyard."
Benji was found near Tolentino's home on June 7, 2005, by a neighbor. The neighbor took the pooch to the humane society, where, DeNardi said, staff members could not even tell if he was male or female.
Benji's hair was so matted and encrusted with excrement, she said, that it formed a cast-like covering that prevented him from walking or running normally. His entire head was matted to his body, preventing him from turning his head, she said.
