DC Comics Resurrects Batwoman As Lesbian
DC Comics Resurrects Batwoman As Lesbian
By LARRY McSHANE, Associated Press Writer

Wednesday, May 31, 2006

(05-31) 13:56 PDT New York (AP) --

Years after she first emerged from the Batcave, Batwoman is coming out of the closet. DC Comics is resurrecting the classic comic book character as a lesbian, unveiling the new Batwoman in July as part of an ongoing weekly series that began this year.

The 5-foot-10 superhero comes with flowing red hair, knee-high red boots with spiked heels, and a form-fitting black outfit.

"We decided to give her a different point of view," explained Dan DiDio, vice president and executive editor at DC. "We wanted to make her a more unique personality than others in the Bat-family. That's one of the reasons we went in this direction."

The original Batwoman was started in 1956, and killed off in 1979. The new character will share the same name as her original alter ego, Kathy Kane. And the new Batwoman arrives with ties to others in the Gotham City world.

1. This completely cracks me up. I think it's great, don't get me wrong
good for them for doing this. I wonder if they are trying to get some of the Xena audience.

3. Wow, I never thought I'd see a lesbian superhero and Al Kaline
in the same thread!

Did you always think it was funny that stuff was either acidic or Al Kaline? I remember being fascinated by that as a kid and wondering if his parents named him that on purpose. I'm sure they didn't realize, no more than the Kupps of North Carolina did when they named their boy Stanley.

9. Clever. All of us Tigers fans are, after all. And they are winning!
Yeah, I remember that well. First year I started following the Tigers was 1961; I was nine that year. They won 101 games and still finished eight games behind the Yankees. I can name the entire starting lineup of that team, as well as the pitching staff, and no, I don't need Google to help me (can't remember where I left my keys yesterday, though).

Denny won his 30th on my 17th birthday. They came back all year, and won it all in one of the five greatest World Series of all time.

I mean Batman and Robin have been engaged in a lurid affair for years now. If you ask me, the age difference is too much in that couple.

16. I'm glad this is happening
Seeing as I want to break into the comic industry someday (Planning on trying to get accepted into Cal Arts though, geez I'm pushing 30 and I want a career!!lol) most of my storylines have a gay or lesbian character in it. I think it is good that most major comic book companies are really starting to broaden up.

"Wouldn't ugly people as heroes be more groundbreaking?" asked one poster. "You know, 200-pound woman, man with horseshoe hair loss pattern, people with cold sores, etc.?"

I like this quote, though I know it's from someone who is probalby anti-gay, I do think that there is some truth in it that they should not only include gays but start putting some "real" people in it. I would be one who would buy a comic with a heaver set woman as the superheroine star.

21. bwahaha, because that's why people read comics
for the realism! They should put in real characters who don't have any superpowers! :silly:
