2. So does the other side but
Olympia Snowe is voting for Scalito. They know how to keep it together that's why they OWN all branches of government.

And are not just trying to sow the seeds of dischord among our ranks .

11. Another DU civil war is about to erupt
From what I gather, many DU'ers are saying their going to leave the Democratic Party if Alito is confirmed; this sentiment is prompting loyalists to circle their wagons, etc., etc., etc.

12. There will be no DU civil war over this
Get serious.

Those of us who have had enough will simply not be here any longer if the Democrats capitulate on this issue.

You cannot fight a civil war with only one side.

16. Believe me, I feel your pain (that's not a smarmy reference to Clinton)
Quitting the Democratic Party was very painful, disillusioning for me. I didn't do it lightly, I had just had enough.

For my part, I'm simply going to capitulate and concentrate on matters closer to home while ignoring politics completely.

26. I understand what you're saying, but also consider the long view
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 05:03 PM by deutsey
Blacks in America after Reconstruction was betrayed had to fight for another hundred years before making the gains they made in the '50s and '60s.

Workers, too, had a hard battle ahead of them as Industrialism re-structured American society after the Civil War.

There are other movements as well that took generations of struggle before fruits were borne.

It's not satisfying on a personal level, perhaps, to admit that, as King said the night before he was killed, we might not live to reach the promised land that we're struggling for in our lifetimes, but we have to make sure we plant and tend to the seeds of progress that may sprout after we're gone.

28. I'd say we are on the leading edge in terms of your analogies
I have neither the time nor the energy to fight a battle that cannot and will not be won in my lifetime, or my children's lifetime.

20. I don't get it
this is no surprise. We knew Nov, 04 this would happen and there wasn't a damned thing we could do about it. This isn't the battle we can win. There will be others, in my opinion.

24. Or, DEMs could filibuster and rally and unify the base like never before.
It's in the hands of capital Hill DEMS, not in the hands of the frustrated & powerless who work for a living.

27. That would be great! Take the fight to the Repugs for once.
The Repugs know how to motivate and energize their base even in losing endeavors. They fight to the bitter end. Our side has never learned that lesson.

Our base is listless and drifting away. I don't feel that the Democratic party stands up for what I believe in and it hasn't for many years. I will vote for Democrats over Repugs every time, but I've pretty much given up calling myself a Democrat. It's really sad that our side will never engage in a fight unless we are sure ahead of time we'll win. The public sees that and we get tagged (not inaccurately) as not standing for anything.
