TX: Rift over MLK parade:Military jet flyover seen as supporting Iraq war
http://www.mysanantonio.com/sharedcontent/APStories/stories/D8F3MPRG0.html

A military flyover planned for San Antonio's annual march to honor Martin Luther King Jr. has caused a rift among participants and prompted some to call for a boycott of the event.

Two fighter jets from Randolph Air Force Base are scheduled to pass over a section of the three-mile march on Monday. Organizers said the display is meant to be patriotic and an honor to King in a city with a strong military presence.

But opponents of the flyover said the gesture represents support for the war in Iraq and runs counter to the beliefs of King and his work.

Critics of the flyover tried unsuccessfully at an MLK Commission meeting this week to scrap the jets from the march plans. Some said they will stay home this year, while others plan to wear bandanas or yellow ribbons as a show of protest.

1. Looks like junior is up to his tricks again. No military fly over.
I do not support this war that was based on a lie and has caused thousands of American lives and a 100,000 Iraqi deaths.

2. Martin Luther King was dead-set against the Vietnam war.
And I'm sure he's feel the same way about this one.

3. saluting a great American ?
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 05:41 PM by dusmcj
an interpretation unconstrained by cynicism might welcome this as overdue recognition in the normal American fashion of a great American. Of course, given the hard work by this administration at providing motivation for cynicism, that interpretation might not be appropriate. When dealing with scumbags, always look for overflow as a sign that they're in action.

E.g. this administration has a bad habit of arrogating to itself qualities that it doesn't have. Like the support of public figures with a loyal following. Transparent attempts at engineering transference of positive feelings, kinda like standing next to a cardboard cutout of a movie star.

5. Martin Luther King WASN'T patriotic enough???
Edited on Mon Jan-16-06 10:41 AM by rocknation
I think injecting Iraq into a celebration of U.S. civil rights is tasteless and inappropriate. And I resent the implication that his memory needs more "patriotism" injected into it!

They should do the flyover either before or after the parade. And by the way, they DO know it's a flyover, and that they're not supposed to drop anything on the marchers, don't they?

6. It would be like giving Gandhi a 21 gun salute

It simply does not compute.

On edit:
Do they have to inject war and war-mongering into EVERY public celebration? It is bad enough they play "God Bless America" during the 7th inning stretch.
