Rep. Richard Pombo lashed back at House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi late Thursday afternoon, just hours after the Democratic leader asked for an investigation into several Republican congressmen, specifically mentioning Pombo and three other politicians.
Pombo said his role as a high-profile House committee chairman has caused him to be unfairly named as a peripheral figure in some recent scandals. In his statement, the Tracy Republican said Pelosi had "stooped to the level of Joe McCarthy" in order to pick up Democratic seats this November and earn the title of speaker of the House.
A scandal, Pombo said in the statement, "always gives Congress a black eye. ... Perhaps the only thing I find more contemptible is the kind of baseless, politically motivated character assassination tactics Congresswoman Pelosi has engaged in today."
Pelosi, D-San Francisco, held a Washington news conference Thursday to release a letter she had written to Speaker Dennis Hastert.

Pombo said environmental groups and Democratic operatives misconstrue his activities but added that it's sometimes hard to explain the nuances of lawmaking procedures.
