Why can't we have a Democratic version of Fox News?
Are there not enough Democrats in the television business?

I don't get it.

1. Well we have Democracy Now
but nobody watches it. I think maybe Amy Goodman (whom I love) is just a bit too grim. (which is why I like her, but maybe it doesn't play well in Peoria)

6. DemocracyNow is the one hour of must listen radio everyday (LINK)
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 05:29 PM by yurbud
Before Air America came on, Democracy Now was like Radio Free America for me--a thread of sanity and truth to hold onto while our country was going Khmer Rouge.

She is just so damned sincere. Kind of reminds me of some really serious nuns I had in grade school. Full of burden for the world.

5. Mergers and megamergers have shut the left out of major media
and funding for cable media has been very hard to come by.

Besides, people on the left side of the political spectrum are unlikely to sit there, hour after hour, chewing their cuds as the pretty colors roll by on the crawl underneath the bottle blonde talking head. We tend to analyze too much of it and ask too many questions.

A couple of months ago, I was CNN in the gym.

The second was the runaway bride

The third was the lost girl in Aruba

And now to sports and weather...

Independent World Television.

They plan to start in 2007. To do that, they need donations in 2006. I've donated.

11. You need corporate bucks
Liberal ideology ,generally, doesnt put corporate wants and needs above the needs of the normal Joe. Conservative ideology does, therefore we have no corporate backers willing to take chances on a risky venture like this. Thats one reason IMO.

20. Ideally, neither Republicans nor Democrats would have a TV channel
which demonized the other side.

But since we can't stop the Republicans on Fox News from demonizing Democrats, at least there should be a channel which does the same to Republicans.

18. if the media did their job and reported the facts truthfully.....
....both parties would be held accountable and we'd have a real democracy. without a free and fair media, that's impossible. it just so happens that the current media is corporate owned and in bed with the repukes, so we get watered down news regarding our current republican controlled government.

so i agree with the people here that say that they don't want a dem version of faux news.....that would equate to left wing spin and propoganda. what good would that do other than give the dems cover to start being as corrupt as the repukes.

having two opposing parties is OK, as long as there's a balance representative of the electorate. so, something as vital as the media should not be controlled by corporate cronies, dirtbags like murdock or anyone else with an agenda.

unfortunately, i guess that's asking too much.

28. It takes HUGE money.. and since there are only so many
licenses, a willing SELLER..and then a total overhaul of satff..

It takes YEARS... The repubes have been building and fine-tuning their media empire for THIRTY YEARS..

If Soros & Turner bought CNN back, and cleaned house, there would be hope, but I don;t see that happening..

Murdoch, mellon-scaife, et al are cagey slippery types and they will not let go of what they have..

Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 08:09 PM by Raydawg1234
I think news should be un-biased, people should decide for themselves.

But that is a problem, People have now come to rely on the TV to provide their opinions for them.
Not an easy problem to solve.

33. News should be apolitical.
Commentary should be two-sided. A liberal TV netowrk is not the answer. It will just preach to the choir. If we have apolitical news and balance in commentary, that will be enough for me.

35. Commentary should be honest.
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 10:07 PM by Zen Democrat
Allowing dishonest discourse in the name of "balance" is absurd. That's why we're in the fix we're in now. What we have now from Wolf Blitzer, Tim Russert, et al., is feeding softball questions to the Rebublicans and challenging anything substantive said by the Democrats. It's not fair and balanced in any way.

I would like to see a network that was honest, with interviewers who are INTELLIGENT, and capable of calling people down on their inaccuracies and spins.

Sometimes Jim Lehrer does that on PBS. Sometimes Charlie Rose does ("and that's important because...?). Olbermann, of course. Maybe Aaron Brown. Definitely Bill Moyers. The Democracy Now Hour. Bill Maher doing the "Larry King"-type show. Perhaps some new-oriented comedy like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, maybe Al Franken producing an SNL type skit show on Saturday nights. News and entertainment that's intellectually honest. I could go for a network like that.

However, because of the international focus, IWT News seems more like CNN in the Ted Turner days than like an answer to Fox News.
