are contributing to inflation at the wholesale level in the short term. In the (much longer) long term, it will eventually make domestic production look more attractive again. However, we're going to see some pretty steep inflation for the foreseeable future, with pay lagging ever farther behind. Remember, pay has never caught up in spending power to 1970 (pre oil shock) levels.
The problem is that our industrial infrastructure is just plain gone. Machinery was either shipped off where the jobs got sent or was called outmoded and melted for scrap. The buildings that once housed it have been turned into yuppie lofts if they're made out of brick or left to rot if they're not.
I'm horribly afraid we're about to live in some very interesting times.
