Micheal Reagan has the homeless figured out.... |
|
i was listenin to reagans show tonight on my way the the store. according to reagan the homeless actually want to be homeless. why does he think this? because someone called in and told him so! and the homeless make 40K a year panhandeling at intersections but actually choose to live in rags. and someone must be making the signs for them because they are all literally to stupid to make them for themselves...but not too stupid cuz they run the intersection scam. and then he went on to make fun of them ( literally laughing ) talking about the homeless pushing shopping carts around.
i couldnt believe what i was hearing. and i made me wonder....if micheal reagan wasnt the son of ronald reagan, would anyone give two shits about what he thinks or sez?
i doubt it.

10. Someone posted a link from a newspaper article |
|
today. It was about an Ashland, Oregon couple with three kids that did make about $40k a year by panhandling. They live in motels and don't appear to be too "raggy".

3. Ronald Reagan said "A lot of people are homeless because they |
|
essentially choose to be homeless." He also believed you could buy an orange with a twenty-dollar food stamp and take the change and go buy vodka. He told people that. He also suggested ketchup should be counted as a vegetable in school lunches. He also thought firing Ollie North (the guy already set up to take the fall) was going to make the whole Iran-Contra scandal go away the next morning after it broke.
We still haven't seen the documents from Bush the Greater's vice-presidency because they're illegally being kept from the public. We're going to get a very interesting update on Iran-Contra when Poppy's ("I was out of the loop") personal papers finally become available.
At least the Reagans acknowledge that the homeless exist. The BFEE can't even see them. Even the ones in New Orleans, apparently.

And Bradley got in trouble when they were on Air Force One and while flying over a forested area, he points out the window, turns to the press and says, "Look, Killer Trees."

He's a liberal Buddhist, and he has his shit together. So, in the sons' department, old Ronnie is batting .500--may not be great for family, but it ain't a bad average for baseball....

8. Everything else aside, some people DO choose to be homeless. |
|
At least one....I've met him.
I've met somebody that spent their life traveling north to south (hitchhiking) as the seasons changed, picking up the odd job to pay for food. They explained to me that they didn't choose to be part of "normal" society (although I doubted their ability even if they chose to do so).
I'm certainly not saying that all...or most...people choose to be homeless, but there ARE people who do make that conscious choice.

If panhandling is so lucrative, then why doesn't Mike try it? But anyway , in the neocon economy, it may well become a growing profession. You have to give them credit for their entrepreneurial savvy, you know, the new "Ownership society"?:puke:

14. I despise that argument. |
|
That's like the "welfare queen" argument.
You can't make a logical argument for or against anything by using the exceptions, and these people are the exceptions.
Yes, there is a somewhat elderly woman here who made an extremely lucrative living by panhandling downtown........but most of those who are pandhandling aren't doing so for the cushy life it provides.
I'm sure that somewhere there exists a "welfare queen," but most of the folks I've known on welfare are out of work and/or pregnant, or disabled..........saying they could all get a job and that they choose to live on welfare because it's such a cushy life is ridiculous.

16. Some of those "choices" you enumerate aren't really |
|
choices. Some don't choose to have sex when they are 13..some are raped. Most don't choose to marry losers, drug dealers, or people who beat them..most get married with stars in their eyes but find out the hard way what kind of person they married after the ceremony and a couple of years of married life. Most are not fine with the idea of living of charity, studies have shown that most who have to resort to welfare or charity, do so for less than a year and quickly get back to a productive life.

18. no one chooses to be an alcoholic or drug addict; |
|
If the pain of your life is unbearable, you got to kill that pain somehow...at some given point you just give up and stay high. Hate to tell you but many kids are beat , molested, have chemical imbalances, etc and grow into dysfunctional adults. No one gets up in the morning and says, "I'm too lazy to work, I'll be a drug addict" If staying alive everyday is all that you can do, school and a job take second place...try being 4yrs old with no family to protect you and tell me what choices you make....by the way welcome to d/u, I'm not sure that your in the right place.

29. Some choose to be born into families in which the parents are .. |
|
using methamphetamine, and spending their money on getting the drug ... some people choose to be born into homes in which they are sexually abused ...
:sarcasm:
I mean, come off, by and large, the homeless I met when I was a social worker suffered from mental illness, including, but not limited to, post-traumatic stress disorder, from having been raised in something akin to a war zone.
They could not have possibly made the choices I was blessed enough to be able to make ... like going to college.
Most never saw the door to a preschool, so they were behind when they hit first grade, and they were busy being beaten or starving when the rest of us were studying after a hot meal.
I don't mean to be rude, but what you are saying is leaves quite a bit of the dynamic out of the picture.

Thats when I realized no good could come from listening to idiots. Really, what good comes from listening to people who hate this country and want to ruin it for everyone else?

Are you saying that because Ronald Reagan adopted him - that he is not REALLY Reagan's son?
If you are, let me know. I have something to say about that.

20. I work with homeless people |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 10:05 PM by meganmonkey
and I am so irritated by that shit I don't even know where to start.
When people think homeless they think of the guy on the corner looking for change. Yeah, the odds are good he's a disabled veteran and the gov't fucked him over. Anyone who doesn't believe me, google it. It's easy to find. I'm not gonna work that hard on a Friday night.
Most homeless people I see are families - young moms with a kid or two whose husband beat the crap out of them, or who is addicted to meth, and they had to get out. Or a couple with a kid or two who lost their home when the husband got laid off from his job in the auto industry, and they have no where to go.
Or disabled or elderly folks who are getting hassled for their benefits and get evicted.
There are ALL KINDS of homeless people. Many of us here are probably a few paychecks or a medical crisis away from homelessness, unless we're lucky to have family to help us out in a crisis.
When politicians and activists advocate for the homeless, please try to think of all the different faces of it.

31. Folks, this is a repeat of the RW "welfare queen" scam |
|
Remember when they used the spurious story of a black welfare mother with a Cadillac car and lots of money from all those kids she spurted out? Remember how the RW successfully used that meme to push their draconian "welfare reform"? This is the same this but even worse because the homeless, for the most part, receive no government funding, and are often mentally ill, or disabled. This is an ugly RW meme that should not receive ANY support from so-called liberals on DU.

why even bother working, when he could be living the plush life of a homeless person, making $40k a year?
And, if he was married, and he and his wife were panhandlers, thats $80k a year! And its tax free!!!
When adjusted, that puts them in the category of upper middle class...
Why is that caller working, like some kind of sucker? Is he that stupid?
