Bush Authorized Domestic Spying Before 9/11

By Jason Leopold
t r u t h o u t | Perspective

Friday 13 January 2006

The National Security Agency advised President Bush in early 2001 that it had been eavesdropping on Americans during the course of its work monitoring suspected terrorists and foreigners believed to have ties to terrorist groups, according to a declassified document.

The NSA's vast data-mining activities began shortly after Bush was sworn in as president and the document contradicts his assertion that the 9/11 attacks prompted him to take the unprecedented step of signing a secret executive order authorizing the NSA to monitor a select number of American citizens thought to have ties to terrorist groups.

2. What was the excuse before 9/11?
I thought he hadn't settled on his war on turrur until after 9/11. Perhaps I was mistook.

3. Possibly cocaine use
and his other reasons for paranoia. For example the fact that he took office under such controversy. He was probably spying because he was convinced someone was going to try to 'violently take him out of office.' Awful to think this way, I know--he just seems the type...

6. I bet he did--
spy on Kerry campaign.

How else would they have strategically trotted out Osama Bin Laden the weekend before voting--to scare the crap out of some, and let others think he was still a threat.

7. You always have to run under the assumption that you
are being monitored. I would be surprised if bush didn't.

10. The technology is there, and all they had to do was use it.
I really don't think they have the moral fiber to resist the temptation.

13. I get the sense they all think Nixon got a raw deal--
they see him and his crew as heroes--not as criminals. I would think he would do EXACTLY as Nixon did, and justify it as 'needed' then kind of just 'allow' 9/11 to happen so that he could further justify and validate his actions.

14. Much of what you see out of the GOP is revenge for
Nixon. The impeachment of Clinton was revenge for Nixon. The GOP never forgot or forgave Hillary for working with the prosecutor in the Watergate investigation. That forms the core of their hatred for her.

The hard time Clinton had getting people on the Supreme Court and federal courts was because of Robert Bork. Bork was a hero to the Republicans because when others ( Attorney General Elliot Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus) refused to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox, Robert Bork stepped forward to do the deed. His nomination to the Supreme Court was his reward.

An elephant never forgets.

15. I didn't realize
the whole thing went that deep. Thank you for filling in the blanks for me. I think I need to do some more research and reading on this.

All I knew was that despite what they were doing, Ollie North (reagan era criminal) is spoke of in high esteem by hard core GOP'ers, as is G. Gordon Liddy. I've seen things written about this guy by the right-- pretty scary. He's a hero to them, like he didn't do anything wrong.

:scared:

17. Look at north's association with Richard Secord to see an
even darker side of this man. It goes back to the Vietnam era.

google "Ollie North Richard Secord"

18. Doesn't North have a radio show now--
or something like that? I thought I read somewhere on-line where right wingers were rhapsodizing about how great he was, that he had some sort of gig like this--or maybe I'm mixing him up with Liddy. Hare to keep criminals straight...

I should have known. I was changing channels and saw his name on the guide for faux. Ugh--no wonder his name comes up so much with them.

Been nice chatting with you--have a great week! :hi:

11. We all knew he is smarmy slimey bastard!
Doesn't surprise me one bit, but we should all be saying Bush and Watergate in the same sentance as often as possible, followed the word impeachment.
