WASHINGTON - Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Miami Township, said Thursday that she's heard mixed views from Afghan and U.S. officials over whether terrorist Osama bin Laden is dead or alive.

"President (of Afghanistan Hamid) Karzai suspects that he's alive, and he has suspected that he's probably hiding in Pakistan," Schmidt said in a telephone call with reporters during her trip to the Middle East and South Asia.

"The military that we talked to, guys and gals ... there was a mixed view of whether he was dead or alive," Schmidt said. She added that the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan said bin Laden was "probably hiding out on the Pakistani border."

Schmidt told reporters she spent some time in Bulgaria talking about agriculture issues, then visited with U.S. soldiers and officials in Afghanistan, including a visit to Karzai's palace.

"If you want features, it was an absolutely gorgeous palace that we met him in with absolutely beautiful carpets and ... pink velvet upholstery," Schmdit said.
